Due to a weather bomb which descended on Coromandel on the day we were due to drive to Rotorua, which left floods, landslides and trees down all along the road we were due to take, we were informed by a very helpful man in the tourist office in Tairua that if our nerves could stand it we could try going... We had heard a lot of comments about the road and were almost a bit concerned about taking the trek to Coromandel from Tairua with our hire car despite being fairly experienced off road drivers. In the end we did and were a bit surprised by the exaggeration afforded the road. I can understand it in some ways though as... More

Gorgeous forest scenery, driver needs nerves of steel, lots of hair pin turns. Go slow, let others pass you.

Gravel road most of the way. Narrow and winding. The shortest route between Mercury Bay's Whitianga and the Hauraki Gulf's Coromandel township. Takes you through dense bushland and amazing sights. Stop at the 309 Honey for honey and associated products. Go past or stop to feed the pigs. All in all an amazing ride.

This is a pretty, windy, narrow and scenic road that is gravel (blue metal) that gets you from Hahei back to Coromandel. The route is relatively quick compared to the alternative route but can be a little stressful as very narrow and virtually no visibility of the road ahead along most of the windy corners (probably close to 70% of... We passed through from Coromandel Town. We stopped to visit Stu's pigs. They are so cute and came running up to greet us. The place is littered with lots of old cars and shacks. There were lots of baby pigs too. Stu popped out to say hello and was keen for us to cuddle a new born pig. I wasn't... More

Loved driving along this quirky road. One main reason for me was I was told about the Pigs 🐷 Owned by a guy called Stuart. Off we went, yep they were there and didn't disappoint. I took bread and we were surrounded by them baby ones too. Chickens old cars littered this both sided property on this road Others had... More

Yes this is a twisty drive, but it is 10 k shorter than main route. Go slow and enjoy the scenery, water falls , huge kauri trees and pig farm with lots of piglets running around...plus lots more enjoy

We took this drive starting on the Whitianga side. We drove directly through to Castle Rock trailhead. This was an amazing hike and only took us about 30 minutes to the top. It did have a lot of elevation and definitely would be less advised if it had been raining. We had a dry day and the last few days... More

I highly recommend driving this road even though it's most unsealed. Don't expect to drive fast on this road keep your speed down as its a typical country road. The views of bush and walks are spectacular. We went to see the Siamese Kuria just a short 10 minute walk
