Castelnaudary is a lovely picturesque little town on the Canal du Midi.but not much open after 7pm. Restaurants were not in abundance & those that were open were quite expensive. We judged this by the cost of a green salad . We did find a lovely little cafe called L'Instant Grignote. Great service from a young man with a marketing degree who spoke very good English. Cheap good food for a couple of women who didn't want a big meal AT Australia

The canal basins are definitely worth a visit and the town looks attractive across the water but the town itself is a bit drab and we didn't find much to keep us there.

We visited Castelnaudary in mid-September. We shouldn't have.
The place was basically empty, and not only due to the end of the season. Countless shops were abandoned and closed for good, there were hardly any restaurants and the ones that existed were closed (no idea where to eat that famous Cassoulet). On a regular weekday, the town was empty and liveless.
The town takes pride in the bassin of the Canal du midi, but there is nowhere to sit at the shore and enjoy the view with a drink or a coffee even though this could be THE place of the town.
Wherever we walked, we had to try not to step into dog poo or pidgeon poo.
In other words: This town needs a thorough re-do, significant investments and a tourism concept. Until then, it is really not worth the visit.

Hello, We are sorry you didn't enjoy your visit in our little town... In the old town there's plenty of very typical old streets to see. Indeed you can't sit down along The Grand Bassin (beautiful place) because it's a protected area but the harbour is a charming place with a few restaurants and places to sit and have a drink; sorry you didn't find them...

We finished a canal trip in Castelnaudary. It's a reasonable attractive town with the large boat basin overlooked by the town on a hill, including a large stone church with attractive clock tower. Wandering through the town, we came across several interesting mansions or "hotels" built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. There's also a Museum (Musee de Lauragais") which unfortunately was closed, probably because of the 1 May long weekend. It's in an interesting-looking old stone building built in the 16th century by a Queen Catherine, who apparently had some connection with the Medicis, and who was also Countess of Lauragais. The building is called the Présidial, andhas been a civil and criminal court with prisons in more recent times.
I suspect the locals are sick of all the foreigners, particularly English, who come through town to start or finish canal boat trips. We were actually refused meal service one lunch time, at the same time as the waitress was taking orders from locals at the next table. The Snack Bar was called Le Francais, which perhaps should have been a clue that they prefer to serve only French!! The waitress was really rude, living up the archetypical rude French person!
And of course there are the locks on the Canal du Midi. The locks just out of town are a set of four in a row, which makes for interesting viewing.

A charming small French city where you can walk, enjoy a boat trip on the Canal du Midi and eat a delicious cassoulet with duck confit and Toulouse sausage (the best recipe).

Come, they are waiting for you

I’d like to say something nice about Castelnaudary, but having stepped in a large dog turd shortly after getting off our boat, I spent the rest of our time here carefully watching where I stepped, rather than enjoying whatever the town has to offer! This is rather sad, especially since the town authorities are trying to encourage dog owners to change their behaviour (see the photos). Very sadly this doesn’t seem to be having much effect as we watched several dog owners studiously using their mobile phones while ignoring their dogs as they defecated in public spaces. Really poor show in this day and age....

At first we were not sure about this town, however the longer we have stayed the more we have grown to love it. Especially when we found Domaine de Ferrabouc. Domaine de Ferrabouc has all of it contained within it. Accommodation, relaxation, and views of the sun set which are beyond breath taking. One of our favorite activities was walking along the Canal du Midi. Spring time is the best to visit this town. Winter can be a bit dreary. The tourism office staff were very freindly and helpfull. They spoke excellent English and gave us a lot of information about their town. My recommendation about this town is that you walk it. Walk everywhere and you will see some incredible building with incredible details. Don't forget to visit the church and its park. The best time to do this is at sunset. Just go sit on the bench and watch the colors fade from the sky as the stars start to emerge. Its the kind of view you can never capture with a camera.

Unless you are dead set on having a cassoulet from the home of the food or have hired hybrid bikes and want to cycle along the canal du midi this city really isn't worth the trip.

Castelnaudary Tourisme is the main tourist office located in Castelnaudary, a town in the South of France, which is known for Cassoulet and for Canal du Midí (a water channel). It is located in the middle of one main squares in the town. We came here to obtain some information about restaurants, boats on Canal du Midi and some interesting points in the town. Ok.
