- Clare DSurrey, United Kingdom91 contributionsBeach and caves of MatalaWe took a guided bus trip to Matala beach, village and caves while on holiday in Crete with our teen daughter. We went on a very warm but windy day. The bus trip was very interesting as we saw parts of Crete that we would not have otherwise seen. The tour guide told us about the area and then we had 4 hours in Matala, exploring the shops, having lunch by the sea in a taverna and then my husband and daughter visited the caves while I went on the beach. The shops were really nice but quite pricey, and we enjoyed looking around. There are plenty of cafes and tavernas for a drink, snack or meal. We went in 2 Friends for lunch, on the boardwalk, which was really nice. Matala is where the hippies lived in the 60s. I'm accident prone and, as it was windy, decided not to risk climbing up to the caves on the cliff-face. Instead, I got sand and water blasted on the beach. There were plenty of sunbeds and parasols at €8 a set which was quite reasonable. The beach was more grit than sand which meant it hurt quite a lot when the wind whipped it up. I didn't stay long. My husband and daughter climbed quite a way and went in some of the caves and said they were interesting. In all it was a lovely day.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 9, 2023

It took around an hour from Heraklion and our hire car was very underpowered for the hilly drive! We managed to park on the approach road which was just as well as the beach parking lot looked full. The village has plenty of cafes and stalls selling mainly tourist stuff but the area has a nice ambience and is worth visiting.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsNice Beach on the South Side of CreteThe beach pebbles felt very nice and warm on our feet in March. The beach is home to a unique feature which are some caves carved into the cliff face that were made in the prehistoric period. The caves and town used to be home to some hippies and the hippy culture remains in the artwork around the area. The cost to enter the caves is 2 euros and there was an attendant there despite the beach not being that busy - there were only a handful when we visited. In addition to the caves the beach itself has some Greek mythology about itself and was where Zeus brought Europa to bring her on to Crete. One of the variations of the 2 euro coin features Zeus abducting Europa as a bull and bringing her to Crete which might make for a fun photo. However, this coin was not easy to find when we visited. There are services including changing rooms and toilets by this beach but they were closed and locked when we visited in March. There were a couple of restaurants open and a grocery store but we suspect the majority of the shops were closed due to the low winter season when we visited. We spent about an hour on the beach and made it part of our road trip around Crete. We could have easily spent more time here if we were more prepared and brought towels but the water was still kind of cold in March. We could see this beach being very popular in the high season.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 25, 2024
- XanteYorkshire, United Kingdom1,316 contributionsSmall Stoney Beach with shelved entry to the sea!If you love sandy beaches with an easy entry to the sea, you will hate Matala Beach. 4€ to park in the beach car park, 4€ to visit the hippy caves, 14€ for three sunbeds and a brolly. I did ask jokingly if the brolly could be removed, of course it couldn’t because it was a wooden Pole with a fixed coconut matting top. Get there early as all sun beds are taken by 11:00am and this was mid September. On the day we went the sea was calm. The beach itself is not sand, it is very small grit pebbles. As you enter the sea they give way like quicksand before you encounter the large rocks/boulders under the water. The water however was crystal clear, almost clearer than water from the tap. The secret is to launch yourself quickly! We enjoyed our day here but there are much better beaches to be found and the area is quite commercialised.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 21, 2024

Mobbed beach early September. General vibe and style of cafes ugly and more like the nastier type resorts of Spain in the 1970s and 1980s before Spain upped its game. Mainly went because of the caves but after paying for parking spend only about 10 mins before getting out of the depressing place. Very non crete experience.

Matala is an amazing little beach, with very unique geological features. However, as it is way over crowded for us, we preferred to explore other beaches in the area, and visited Matala only in the end of the day for sunset and food. You can also visit the caves, and they are very interesting.

Was very busy so no sun beds available. The beach is shingle type sand so wasn’t the most comfortable thing to lie on. Lots of stones in the water so wear shoes. Huge waves when I went so may be unsuitable for little ones or those with reduced mobility. Can climb the caves for €4 if you want but no guide ropes just freehand so be wary!

Lovely town with a great vibe. No shortage of restaurants and cafes in town and along beach front. Beach is shingle and goes deep quick so not great for young kids. Water is clear and the day we went in July there were no waves and no wind so it was very hot on beach. All beds and beach umbrellas were taken by time we arrived at midday. The caves are good to view but if doing in Summer the end or start of day when cooler may be best option, they were 4euro for adults. We parked nearby in covered car park for 5 euro and easy to locate a parking spot. Would recommend a visit if in Crete.

Beautiful place, but a bit destroyed by tourism actually. Not the best for families with small children (hence the low grade), but otherwise excellent for snorkeling. No sand in the sea, but slippery rocks - needing to know how to swim is probably a must to have a good time (my son didn't). Also pebbly beach, so no sandcastles...
Go here to see beauty if you can swim and love snorkeling :) Also, if you want to pay 4 euros to go and visit the caves. And if you want to pay 8 euros for a sunbed and umbrella...

The inspiring history of that place was really present there. Even though there were a lot of sun beds that you had to pay for them it was easy to find a perfect spot under the trees. The water was crystal clear and very deep but the best attraction in my opinion was sightseeing the caves. It was a little bit dangerous so you had to be careful because there was no barriers. The sights from that place are amazing and the history makes it even more interesting.

Visited first time specific beach and was really very beautiful. Beach is too crowed in July-August time but the water is very clean and you can enjoy a dive from the rocks of the caves.
Worth to see the caves that people from all over the world were living (in 1960s) having a very difference way of life.
Only negative is that nowadays you need to pay to visit the caves.

This is a lovely spot, all the more interesting for the Joni Mitchell and 1960s 'hippies' connections, but judging from my visit today Matala is struggling to cope with the hordes of visitors it attracts. Though there's plenty of parking, you'll have to arrive early to reserve beach space and visiting the caves will cost you 4€. That said there are some friendly gift shops and reasonably-priced cafes and bars in the central 'square'.

Is there a laundry salon in Matala? We will stay for a week and our hotel doesn't offer laundry service. Thanks a lot!

Is there anywhere to safely store your valuables?
Written April 9, 2019
There is a bar in that beach, they sell the "best mojito in the world" and, believe me: the world's most expensive one also! :D
I guess you can store your stuff there, they also rent sunshades and they serve people that stays on those rented sunshades.
The guy was not very friendly...

Is the resort predominantly visited by Brits or Germans/Europeans etc, I can’t find many reviews from Brit’s on the hotel that we like the look of and my dad likes to chat to people and would have an issue with language barrier (he has a strong geordie accent)

Hi...how far out are the ruins on the east side of the beach? Can you swim or do you need a boat? TIA :0)
Written August 21, 2017
The ancient caves are right next to the beach. They charge admission to them, but you can climb the rocks and walk through the caves. We did not go to the more recently discovered (1980s) ruins, which are a little southeast of the beach. Since the beach faces east, I would assume that these ruins are not right on the water. You can google all of this and look at a map. The beach is just gorgeous, with plenty of chaises and umbrellas for rent (cheap!). There are also lots of cafes facing the water where you can stop for lunch, a snack or a bottle of wine. Have fun!
