Sperlonga is not only beaches, but also a charming town on the Riviera di Ulisse. Walking and wandering along these narrow streets, looking into hidden nooks and crannies is one sheer pleasure and delight. There are a lot of some small details, finds in the design of houses, doors, courtyards that make you stop and look, admire, be surprised at unexpected decisions. Narrow crooked streets either lead to a dead end, or suddenly cross in a bizarre way, or suddenly lead to a small square called Piazza della Libertà. Due to its location on a cliff above the sea, its dazzling white color, the way the houses climb up, as if overtaking one another, Sperlonga is very photogenic. She looks beautiful from every angle.

The historic center of Sperlonga stands compactly on the so-called hill of San Magno, a spur dominating the Tyrrhenian Sea, and is well preserved in its fundamental features.
The settlement is not very ancient (at least according to Italian standards): in classical antiquity it's likely that the vicinity of the Villa of Tiberius was much more populated. The first mention of the current site (as a castrum with an annexed church dedicated to St. Peter, patron of fishermen) dates back to the 10th century.
Fief in the Middle Ages of the powerful Caetani family, Sperlonga was affected at the beginning of the early modern age (like all the relatively isolated coastal towns in the north-western Mediterranean) by the consequences of the "racing war" unleashed on behalf of the Ottoman Empire; and the presence of a ring of walls and fortresses - of which the most visible today is fort Truglia - was of little use. The infamous pirate Khair ad-Din known as "Barbarossa" even razed it to the ground in 1534.
It's therefore understandable that, even if Sperlonga has (slowly) recovered from this catastrophe, it has never been able to draw on a great economic vitality. A leading consequence of the threat that for centuries went from the sea are the narrow, winding and steep alleys wrapping around the hill.
The weak economic vitality has thus handed over to the contemporary age an urban jewel, which lives largely on seaside tourism. Jewel today perhaps too touristy (eateries, souvenir shops ...), but still pleasant (at least for people not too fancy). The uniformly white color of the plaster is also very striking, not as common in Italy as (say) in Greece.

Sperlonga is a gem of a town on the coast, easy access to both Rome and Naples. The centro storico is small and easy to navigate. Don’t fail to have aperitivi in Piazza Liberte. And also stroll down to the beach and walk along the wall.

Sperlonga is a lovely small town with a beautiful old center square. There are nice restaurants, bars, shops. A walk around the small streets is so relaxing. The views to the surrounding mountains, beaches and the sea are breathtaking. It is very easy to find car parking near the old center square.

The seaside village is splendid, well maintained and very pleasant to walk around. Everything is white and has a marine theme. Every alley a surprise. I imagine it is very nice to stay there in the summer.

We visited Sperlonga following a trip to Rome. The town of Sperlonga is absolutely beautiful, with many narrow cobbled street jutting out of many areas. The architecture is very vintage Italy and you will be in awe at the views and beautiful streets. Would highly recommend visiting, but where comfortable shoes!

This was my 4th visit to this beautiful town on the sea although it was several years ago since my last visit I was delighted to find Sperlonga unchanged. I just wanted to spend a week relaxing and this is the perfect place to do it. The town is really pretty with a warren of whitewashed passageways and staircases. There are two beautiful blue flag beaches and many restaurants and bars. At the top of the town is a big piazza overlooking the sea, really beautiful. You can walk along the beach to the Villa and Grotto of Tiberius with a great little museum that holds the finds from the excavations in the 1950's. One thing that really stands out for me is how clean Sperlonga is compared to the many other places I have visited over many years holidaying in Italy. There is a sense of civic pride here that seems to be lacking in other places. Because of it's position Sperlonga is perfectly placed for day trips to Rome, Naples and Pompeii.
