As a family we holidayed at Kaka Point for 20 years. Trips to Roaring bay and the Lighthouse were always a highlight. Disappointing now to see hordes of tourists head down to Roaring Bay to photograph a penguin. Its clear that penguin numbers have reduced and the large amount of visitors in this area clearly contributes.

Penguins, simply stunning and an easy walk. If you like penguins this will make you happy. Very helpful DOC worker (volunteer) and a good hide to see them from.

This Northern entrance point to the Catlins District, has many places to stop, enjoy the view, fish, swim, picnic or walk... unfortunately camping of any sort (even certified self contained) is not a welcomed activity in this district. Goodness knows why; because as well as being a very scenic and beautiful place with a very, very small population, the locals... More

We stopped for a few minutes on our way through to Te Anau. Beautiful spot though freezing cold during winter

About an hour before dusk, we waited in the hide for some penguins to come ashore. One or two were spotted in the shore grass and the other "watchers" left. Shortly after, several arrived, in and along the shore before hitting the rocky beach. No so graceful on land, as they waddled and hopped over the stones on the beach.... More

We arrive at Roaring Bay to try and see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and were not disappointed. On the walk down we spotted 2 penguins on the grass line on the beach. By the time we walked down to the hide, another Penguin emerged from the water and by the time we left, about an hour and a half later,... More

Fantastic little place of beauty, we stayed at Kaka Point Spa Motel At Catlins 26 Esplanade, 9271 Kaka Point, New Zealand You will not believe how good this place is. You even get a seaview from the bathroom. Seals and penguins to be seen . Lovely beach and wonderful walks.

We went at 8.30pm. Easy to access and saw 5 penguins come out of sea. That was pretty cool to see. Take binoculars and be prepared to be patient and wait. If you go to Owaka Museum you see a real stuffed one (hopefully died natural causes!!); connects the roaring bay distant view to a close up.

Arrived here after 4pm and waited patiently with another couple who were friendly and lent us their binocular to get a better view of the cute penguins. Timing is important to view penguin. If mid-day, I doubt there will be any activity. After getting the winds on our faces for perhaps around 1.5 hours, we managed to see as many... More
