The 2hr trek is well worth the views of the pinnacles especially for a LOTR fans like us. We came totally unprepared for the walk and didn't realise it would take so long but still enjoyed ourselves. You'll need good shoes as there is no...More

Putangirua or the Pinnacles as they are called are amazing rock formations worn & weathered over time by water and erosion. This was one of the sites used in the filming of The Lord of the Rings. The track to the viewing platform takes around...More

Walked along the stoned river bed to the base of the pinnacles and then to the TOP look out. Totally worth the effort though it was tiring with a toddler along! The formations are amazing, nature at its best.

The walk to the site is representative of Middle Earth. Met a few walkers on the way and back. Loved it!

Stopped here on our way down to Wellington. Great scenic drive. The Pinnacles cover a huge area and take quite a bit of time to cover so plan accordingly. We had to cut our stay short and wish we could have seen more but what...More

What an amazing view and worth the effort. Not being fit I struggled at times but a great feeling to see the pinnacles. Not far from Cape Palliser and a must see on a clear day. Tracks are well maintained and an easy descent through...More

Always wanted to do this walk. It says it's an easy track but it does get a bit rough in places. There is not really any real track for the first part- from the carpark you pop out onto the streambed and basically make your...More

Stayed overnight at the Doc Camp which is very rudimentary so come self contained (yes there are 2 toilets). Tramped in with young kids next morning on very hot day. Was surprised as it took slightly longer than recommended time to walk in. No shelter...More

I can't be sure of the distance. Perhaps 2km with the last section quite steep but pathways are manageable.

I think it is achievable, but would suggest you get a fairly early start from Wellington. You definitely need a good day to do the pinnacles. Are you aware that as well as the pinnacles there is a seal colony a bit further... More
