We drove out with our young ones, thinking there would be a place with picnic spots a jetty and a park or something, but there isn't. Just worth a trip for a quiet, scenic drive.

I am a photographer and I love the outdoors, there are plenty of walks, reserves, places to fish, picnic areas and a camp ground. A good number of bird species call the lake home, so if you are into bird watching, photography or just like spending time in the great outdoors I think the Lake Wairarapa has a lot to... More

Wairarapa Moana is a wonderful adventure playground. A huge range of reserves, picnic areas, bird watching areas and fishing spots. Great for family groups and tourists. A must see for locals and visitors.

Travelling through NZ in our van rental. Thought this would be a great camp spot along our journey, but it was almost to quiet in that there wasn't anything to do other than lay around. No paths to walk. Not much of scenery. Kind of flat land for miles. Huge water reservoir. There's a big parking area with some trees... More

Just a quiet peaceful beautiful countryside/lakeside drive.... not much else. Some places to stop for picnics but nothing to buy along the way so be prepared!

If your looking for a great day trip from Wellington then this one is highly recommended. Travelling on Route 2 from Wellington its not long before the city is left behind. The road through the Rimutaka Mountains is spectacular. It is also the location where Rivendell was filmed in the movie "Lord of the Rings". This is a great place... More

Lake Wairarapa is a large lake nestling under the Rimutuka hills and is very picturesque particularly at sunset. Best place to see it is from 1 S Soldiers Settlement Rd, Lake Reserve 5771 just a 10 min drive south of Featherston. Well worth the drive.

Having kayaked on this lake I found it to be very shallow and strong winds can rip throuh there from the hills. As there is mainly farmland and very little bush around the Lake it is not as interesting as some other lakes but the preservation of the Wetlands had encouraged the wildlife which is lovely to see.

A very quiet place with spectacular sunsets over Rimutakas range in Wairarapa. There are swans and native birds nesting around the lake. It's one of our favourite place.

This is the first time I have ever been disappointed with the views in New Zealand. The Wairarap Lake is murky and unattractive with no hills or pretty scenery around it. We arrived with a picnic and planned a nice walk, but there is nowhere really nice to park, and no trails for walking. There are apparently some bird hides,... More
