About
The Historical Museum of Tracadie is outstanding because it is the only museum in Canada to present an outline of what a leper hospital would look like at that time, which is the 19th century.

Interesting little known piece of our history
Jun. 2018 • Friends
We visited this museum as part of a history tour. Although I had heard there was a leper "colony" in New Brunswick in the past, our visit here was a real eye opener about the way those who suffered from this once little understood and feared disease were treated until fairly recent times. The staff are very helpful and start the visit with a video about the history of why Tracadie became the site of one of only 2 facilities in Canada to isolate and more recently to treat lepers. There are many historical photos and artifacts about how the lepers were housed and treated over the years until the causative bacteria was found and a cure discovered, ending this scourge. Interestingly, prior to the finding of a cure, none of the nuns who worked here for over 100 years ever contacted the disease due to their scrupulous hygienic practices.

Really enjoyed this small museum located in an old historic building very close to the downtown core of Tracadie; ;although I have been to Tracadie many times over the last 40+ years, I learned many interesting facts about the area, its residents, very intriguing information about the leper colony which was sequestered there long ago as well as the incredibly wonderful people who cared for them; museum has lots of photos & artifacts; so glad that we took a few hours to visit & read everything! Also includes a small cemetery across the laneway from the parking area.

Although the museum was closed at lunch time we did wander inside the old building. The grounds are quite interesting.

Interesting piece of the past

The museum provides a glimpse into the past of Tracadie-Sheila, in particular how leprosy affected their community (beginning in the late 1800's) and how people with the disease were cared for here. It was interesting to learn the theories about how the disease arrived in the area, and how treatment evolved over time. A lazaretto was built, and a group of nuns provided care for people over a period of several decades. There are local cemeteries for some of the patients and their caregivers as well. The history is well documented and preserved by the museum. We also got a tour from one of the volunteers, which was helpful and illuminating.
