I'd visited the Basilica in the main hill town of Assisi before, but having since read the St. Francis story, it was good to see here, the little church where he began. You have the think Francis would not approve of the vast church they propped over his small chapel, but it's rather a unique site to see. Having seen dozens of cathedrals, this one will really stick with me. Seeing the many Franciscan monks in their habits and the inside full of pilgrims gave a real sense of awe to the place. Don't just go up the hill to see the Basilica, definitely stop here as well.

I did not know anything about the Porziuncula before I found myself inside. Maybe that was why, upon entering, I had no expectations. It called to me. I was profoundly moved internally and it felt safe... but not only the space but by the energy, the spiritual energy that I cannot describe. Quiet and comforting. I prayed or meditated or just "was." Will you feel that? Maybe, and no matter, it is a special and important place to visit. Don't miss it. And Santa Maria is a gorgeous church, as well. You will see art and paintings that will be forever etched in your brain... I highly recommend it. Even if you are not religious, you will understand why Francis felt this was where he wanted to be and like him, we are all in our own transition.

In the basilica del Santa Maria degli Angeli is the tiny Porziuncola, where St. Francis of Assisi began his order of Franciscan friars. This tiny building is in the middle of a huge basilica, which is very beautiful in its own right. But the juxtaposition of an ancient little chapel, stunning in its simplicity and historical significance as the first headquarters of the Order of St. Francis, makes it a very special place indeed.

Anyone who studies St. Francis of Assisi, or St. Clare of Assisi needs to know about the key role of the Porziuncola. It is worth reading about ahead of time, or having a tour guide explain. It has the feeling of a very holy place. People seem to be in awe just walking by it with great respect.

My parents and I visited this Museo, which is actually a super old, small church within a tall old church. You can feel the sacredness if the place. Within the small church, I got a feel of how an authentic church may have felt many many years ago. The painting at the altar is mesmerizing. I wanted to sit there for hours simply viewing it. People kneeled in wooden platforms along the sides of the small church to pray. I left to observe the museum, which has artifacts that are beautifully restored unlike anything I’ve seen prior. I wish the museum had a direct translation from Italian to English along with the art and artifacts. The pamphlet helps but is not as thorough. This is a well constructed, small museum inside a tiny portion of a large functioning church.

The Porziuncola in Assisi is a hidden gem. The little church that St. Francis rebuilt is housed in the larger church of Saint Mary of the Angels. The atmosphere is always quiet and reverent with many people stopping to pray.

This is a must see site as a church within the beautiful and striking Santa Maria degli Angeli. This was a very simple but favorite church where Saint Francis spent his time to reflect. Highly recommended.

My wife and I were married in the replica Porziuncola church that is located in Oak Brook, Illinois. In 2015, we missed our tour to Porziuncola so this time we took a train ensuring that we would not miss this exceptional trip.

For those traveling from Rome to Florence or vise versa, you can leave your luggage at the snack shop located in the train station, which is the same place where you buy bus tickets. The cost to store luggage was 25 euros for seven bags.

Porzinucola is only about four blocks away from the train station so it is within walking distance. The walk to the church was beautiful. I really loved the Italian ambient of Assisi.

It was a gratifying sensation to visit Porziuncola. When we were walking to the rose garden through a small hallway, we saw doves flying. I felt as though I was watching a movie when I saw the doves flying. This holy moment took me back causing me to say “You have to be kidding me”, indeed, I was embracing the surreal moment. We saw at least two doves. Apparently the doves are part of the church.

The merchants outside of the church will close down for siesta so if you arrive around noon, make sure that you purchase your souvenirs prior to entering the church.

Finally, the bus stop is right next to the merchants so you can take the bus to St. Francis Basilica without having to walk back to the train station.

The Assisi site with the most important connection to St, Francis, a place he loved more than any other, is actually a mile and a half outside Assisi in Santa Maria degli Angeli. Dwarfed inside a grandiose, touristy basilica built to enshrine it (NOT the even more touristy basilica the bears his name and bones in Assisi) is the Ponziuncola chapel. More than 800 years ago it sat is disrepair in a peaceful forest. Today it sits under a grand basilica dome -- still a monument to humility, simplicity and the contemplative life. It was here in this small but sacred space (it measures only 10-feet by 23 feet) that Francis retreated in prayer... lived for 18 years...where he took in the runaway Clare (St. Clare)... and where.the Franciscan order was born. A goosebump experience for Francis followers able to shut out the commercialism that surrounds. There is a small admission fee; and for reasons I could not immediately fathom other than perhaps to enhance postcard sales, no photos are allowed inside the basilica.

It's been almost 7-8 years since my first visit to the Porziuncula at Santa Maria degli Angeli (St Mary of the Angels) Church in Assisi - yet I will always treasure the fond memories of this very unique place!

For me, the Porziuncula is a very special place - perhaps the only one of its kind in this entire universe?

The Porziuncula is a little chapel which is built within the Basilica of St Mary of the An (Santa Maria degli Angeli) - it's a little chapel (a little portion) within a huge big Basilica - one needs to visit and experience the special-ness of this place to appreciate its very special characteristics.

For those who embrace the spirit of St Francis of Assisi and who are familiar with his life experiences, being present in the Porziuncula and whispering a little prayer from the heart, one can experience a kind of "heaven on earth" - such was my personal experience when I first stepped into this very awesome place in Assisi - it's an experience which left such a deep and lasting impression on me, which lasted for a good 7-8 years.

I first visited the Porziuncula one summer day on 11 July 2007 - and I remembered I spent a good afternoon just being in there, to soak in the spirit of Assisi and of St Francis - the little man of Peace who had created such a big impact in the world. Francis' simple lifestyle is popular and he is well known even amongst non- Christians and across the various continents of the world.

When you go to Assisi, do make time to visit the Porziuncula and let it be a visit you will always remember!

Pax et Bonum!
