About
Canyoning with Big Rock Adventures embraces the ideals of participating in your own adventure. We take care of the safety and put you out there onto the edge of a waterfall... once you're there, take a calming breath… then, you can either abseil, slide, zipline or just jump off of it!

We are 2 brothers in our 40s, came to NZ for adventures. We contacted Big Rock and set up a canyoning activity. We spoke with Koryn our guide. We
booked a day trip that was the best challanging and .enjoyable activity

Koryn was very professional and welcoming. We felt
very safe and in the best hands possible. Highly recommended!!!

A lot of fun for the family. A lot of Adrenalin filled adventure. The guides are lovely and knowledgeable. One of our favourite activities we did whilst in New Zealand

Booked this trip for a group of x15 travelling from Wellington. Excellent communication throughout from Koryn. Went the extra mile to arrange pickup at CHCH airport and also put on a BBQ at the end of the trip for everyone. The team all raved about the day out and I cannot recommend the activity and the Company highly enough.

We both had such a great first time experience canyoning in the good hands of Koryn and Big Rock Adventures. While some parts of the video might seem scary, we received proper training , guidance and safety instructions, and all the obstacles were performed under tight safety back-up controlled environment.

The activity starts with a ride across the farmland up to the top of the Kaumira canyon, and blessed were we to be accompanied by Bluey, the farm’s herding dog, to bring back the lost sheep.

Once we hit the canyon, we were trudging through slippery streams, jumping off 3, 4 and 10m cliffs, abseiling down a 25m waterfall, zip-lining, sliding and splashing in the wilderness of NZ!

This is one experience that we will totally recommend! How often do you get the opportunity to slide down right next to a waterfall?

A big thank you to Koryn for the awesome experience!

Bloody brilliant day out! New to the area, I had a rafting trip booked which was cancelled last minute due to rising floods on the Rangitata. Koryn and Dylan worked to secure us a place with a guide (Darryn) instead. It was so, so worth it! If you're up for zip lining, absailing down waterfalls, jumping, sliding and wading through rivers, this is for you!

The team were super responsive and flexible getting us in at the last minute. Comms were clear about where to go and what to do. Starting off meeting at the Mt Nimrod reserve parking area where we were met by the chilled, professional and lovely Darryn. Kitted up, we were then escorted up to the start point in a custom quad by local farmer Graeme. This was such a great way to start the trip. We saw incredible views and farmland and got to meet the lovely fella whose land allows us to do this adventurous activity. We had so much fun; incredible landscape; beautiful waterfalls. Lunch was so good and the whole vibe was just great. It was action-packed, full of variety and unique ways of getting down and through the canyon. These guys have put a massive effort into creating a unique and varied canyoning experience.

Awesome fun; great guide; really brilliant way to see the area. Thanks for a wicked experience, guys!

Thanks so much Beth for the raving review!! Darryn said you and Tabea were the best team he has guided alllllll season :-))))) Seriously it is our pleasure to share what we love with others and I hope you still get to raft the Rangitata... it's the grandad of Canterbury adventure tours... who knows, Darryn might even be your guide again. If you are ever interested in doing some more canyoning with us, we also have expedition style trips... but you'll have to earn the altitude by hiking up to the start... we only have one Graham :-). Huge thanks once again for coming along Beth and Tabea.

Had an excellent trip to the Kaumira canyon with Koryn - everything was super professional from start to finish. The day is varied with a mix of jumps, abseils, ziplines and slides, and even a quad bike ride to get you to the start. Koryn was a great guide, giving us clear guidance with good humour so that we always felt 100% confident, even though it was our first time canyoning. The included lunch and highlights video were added bonuses. Highly recommended!

Thank you Antione for sharing your memories about canyoning in Kaumira canyon. It would be great to see you again on one of our Expedition trips now that you are a fully trained.. Bring your fitness though, the other trips don't have that 4WD ride to the top... you'll have to earn it from now on ;-). Thanks again for joining us!!

Had an amazing day canyoning out of Geraldine with Koryn. He's an excellent and very experienced guide meaning he's able to quickly figure out your level of comfort/experience and then tailors the trip/his approach to suit. We are both outdoorsy types, having done plenty of cool wilderness stuff and this was right up there with one of our best days out. Plenty of variety meant the thrills just kept on coming - the day was a joy right from the start with a "classic kiwi" ride on the back of the farmers vehicle to get access to the put in point, Koryn's attention to safety while still being relaxed so you get to enjoy yourself, right through to the food and beverages provided as part of the trip.
Just do it - you won't be disappointed!!!

Hi Kirsty! Thanks for taking the time to give others an insight into what a day in Kaumira canyon is like. Hopefully we can take you into one of our expedition canyons next time you are passing through... no ride to the top though... you'll have to earn the height next time ;-). Thanks once again for the awesome review and til next time!!

So glad I came to Christchurch as the canyoning trip was awesome. So many great jumps and brilliant abseiling spots. The owner, Koryn, has set up some innovative and interesting ways to get down the waterfalls which makes it even more exciting, never knowing what is coming next! Koryn and our guide Luke were both so friendly and knowledgable. Luke had us jumping off edges of heights up to 10m and abseiling down a huge waterfall. Plus some zip lines, slides, forwards abseiling and even dropping from the zip line, always making sure we were safe in the process. It’s well worth the visit if you want an adventure!
Thanks Koryn and Luke :)

A fear of water (although I have learned to swim confidently given I live in NZ - a country surrounded by water) and a fear of being cold have always been a thing for me. One thing I have never lacked is courage...throw a challenge at me and I’ll say yes and think later.

I knew what I had signed up for, the 8hour Kaumira Canyon, but I didn’t really think too hard about it in case I decided to chicken out of the 5 hours of cold water, jumping off and sliding down waterfalls. The result of my courage and trust in Koryn and Dick was a smile that stretched ear to ear for most of the day, with the occasional scream and thought of WTF am I about to do (think of the coyote from the road runner cartoon when he realised he was about to fall). It was honestly the best day I have had in a few years and right up there with sky diving, bridge swinging, tough mudder etc.

Right from when we walked up to introduce ourselves and were informed it was a going to be a personal tour for the 2 of us that I had booked for (seriously how often do you come across tours that allow you and friends of similar fitness to go at the pace you want rather than waiting around for others) I felt safe and felt like I had a name rather than ‘a number’.

Shoes, super thick wetsuits (yes dual), booties, head warmer, gloves, life jacket, helmet and thermal tops (provided by Koryn) were all checked for size and packed into my gear box. My fear of getting cold was instantly removed! My fear of water was kept at bay through constantly giving me clear instructions on how to land and where to land. The beginning ‘tests’ gave me confidence that all my gear would pop me straight up to the surface without thinking. All I needed to do was hold my breath when I hit the water and smile when I surfaced.

Honestly, the background and the skills of the business owner, Koryn, and his guide, Dick, was super impressive!! They not only have the guiding qualifications but are highly trained in Search And Rescue too. They are OCD in their Health and Safety, but that has actually increased the fun aspect! The gear was constantly being checked and never assumed that because it worked last time that it would be fine this time round. Professionalism plus to be able to see this taking place.

Koryn has worked hard to create an amazing adrenaline adventure through his lifetime of networks in a small community. He has obviously created it to share his passion of canyoning so everyone can experience the serenity, scenery and fun of a sport that shows a whole
new perspective of the world that had him hooked from when he first tired it. I often sat on the rocks and was in awe of the environment around me.

I’ll be having another adventure with Koryn in the near future and I’m even considering taking a 2 day course with him so I can start to learn how I can do it myself without a guide.

The lunch and snacks were awesome too.

If you are thinking about it, stop thinking and just do it. You won’t regret the smile and memories!

Thanks team Big Rock Adventures!!

I had an adrenaline-filled afternoon with Big Rock Adventures canyoning at Glentui Canyon. Following some safety training, we hit the adventure straight on by abseiling down a waterfall and star jumping off the end of the rope into the water. We followed the gorge using the natural curves in the rocks by the river as slides, jumped off overhangs into the pools below. We even ziplined off a waterfall. Luke, our guide was very knowledgable and great fun to be around. He made the experience fun and interactive as well as safe. And best of all we had a great treat at the end of the trek after we had the chance to get a warm shower and into a change of clothes to re-energise us.
