We parked on Karangahake hall and walked through the tunnel first and reached the other end. We walked through the swinging bridges and the walkways. The crown is closed until - as shown on the photo that i uploaded with this.
Must bring poncho for a rainy day. The tracks have beautiful views And picturesque backgrounds. Its worth the walk :)

An easy cycle ride, mostly flat with beautiful scenery. I particularly enjoyed swimming beneath a waterfall - the water was icy cold, just the thing after getting hot and bothered on a bike. Highly recommended.

We did the rail loop track as the windows walk was closed for urgent repairs. I would glass it as an easy walk but it's not wheelchair accessible.

The tunnel part of the track is shares with the cycle rail trail so watch the bikes sneaking up behind you

Rail loop walk. We did the Rail loop walk as the windows walk was closed for urgent maintenance. It was a relatively easy walk and the tunnel is an amazing experience to walk through.

No complaining from the 14 yo

Walkways, stairs, bridges, tunnels and caves. A little for anyone who likes the outdoors whether on foot or by bike. Some of the walks take anywhere between 1 hour to 6 hours round trip. There is a board in the car park that tells you about the Gorge and the paths to take. We did the Windows Walk which takes you along the Railway track via some really dark tunnels - mind your head and where you are stepping when going through these. When we went the bridge that connects the walk in a loop was closed so we had to come back on ourselves. Some of the pathways allow for bike riding too so just make sure you've taken the correct path. Note that the only toilets are at the start in the car park. There are no more toilets until you get to the far side where the cafe is. Terrain is a little uneven in places and some of the caves are quite dark. Would suggest wearing good walking shoes or good sneakers and make sure you take a torch or at least have your phone with you! There are a few walks to do with different paths to take. Th roughly recommend going here if just to pass through and take some photos.

We were dragged along by my husband and it was a great surprise how much fun the walks, tunnel and caves were. Note, wear good walking shoes or grippy sneakers.

Great place to cycle or walk with minimal ups and down gradients! The tunnel and bridge makes it interesting for the children and there are cafes close by!

Lush green forests with plenty of walks and a rich history of gold mining, railways etc.
We visited Karangahake Gorge during Christmas and New Year eve of 2020. We decided to walk from the car park to Owharoa Falls, which took us through a 1 km long tunnel (previously used by railway in the gold mining era), after which the walk is where the train tracks would have been.
After spending some time at the Owharoa Falls, we returned the same way - except that we took the Windows Walk instead of taking the rail tunnel.
It was an excellent day out, popular with families - both walking as well as on push-bikes.
The gorge offers many other walks, of different durations and needing varying degree of fitness. A great day out - whether you are alone, a family or part of a big group!
