Kournas Lake is the only freshwater lake in Crete. Lake Kournas was known as Lake Koressia in antiquity but later took its current name from the Arabic word for lake. The lake is in a beautiful landscape, lying in a valley among the hills, about 4 km from Georgioupolis in Chania Prefecture (west Crete). Lake Kournas is relatively small, with... More

Found this place on trip advisor and thought why not, we were not disappointed. Seeing the turtles/Terrapins was fabulous. Plenty of places to eat and drink overlooking the lake. Top tip if you want to see the Turtles have patience sit still in the pedalo and be quiet. Loved it !

We visited the lake at the same time last year & was amazed at how low the water level was this year, apparently it was a very hour dry Sumer. With less water in the lake it was easier to get into a depth for swimming, less rocks to climb over but still a lot of silt which at times... More

Just a short drive up from Georgioupolis, also served by the "fun" train, this is well worth a visit for an hour or two. We paid €8 for 3 on a peddle boat and enjoyed a relaxing trip around the lake followed by a drink with a view at a nearby Taverna. The lake level was quite low in October... More

We visited in late October, rented a paddle boat (10euro) and had a lovely, quiet time circumnavigating the lake. Birds, ducks, a snowy egret. Then we had stuffed pumpkin flowers at one of the several lakeside tavernas. In season, I imagine this place is a zoo. But families might want to visit anyway--there is so much for kids to do...little... More

My Friend and our wives spent a very relaxing afternoon here and really enjoyed the place. It is a stunning location, very popular and I suppose has been turned over the years into something of a tourist trap. Which is understandable. I would agree with a previous reviewer that the pedal boats moored below the tavernas and gift shops are... More

My family had a wonderful 2 weeks summer holiday in Crete during July, and have come away totally blown away by the beauty of the island, hospitality of the locals and friendliness of fellow holiday makers. We've learned that Its always worth asking the locals and hotel staff to recommend places to visit and Lake Kournas was a place that... More

My wife and I stumbled upon this beautiful lake while looking for things to do around Rethymnon. We were amazed at the sheer beauty and tranquility of it. It was like stumbling across of untouched paradise. If you're in the area, make the time to experience it for yourself!

We went here by chance after searching trip advisor. Had lunch and hired a pedalo. I can imagine in the height of the season it would be very overcrowded though. Lovely afternoon on a cloudy day.
