Superb (private) guided tour to the white marble caves of Carrara, a hidded jem in the world of sightseeing. This is the origin of it all. If you want to visit Italy, start from here. Cave di Marmo Tours (Il Tau Tour Operator) is the first, one and only to choose. It is worth to book a private tour as... More

Great behind the scenes tour of Carrara marble mining and production. Our excellent guide, Heike, picked us up in her Land Rover and took us on a breathtaking and informative tour of Carrara marble. A great deal at 40 Euro per person. She picked us up and dropped us off at the train station. She also was a very skilled... More

Dear visitor I'm glad you had a good time in Carrara, but Heike definitely does not work for my company. Thanks Umberto More

Heike - our professional guide - took us right up to the mountains. During the amazing trip and walk we received a lot of interesting pieces of information, how the marble is cut out from the mountain, what machines and methods are used, how was it done before these machines were avaliable, and so on - so we became "marble... What we thought would be a problem wasn't. Umberto messaged us the day before the tour and said that his van had a mechanical issue, but offered to use our car, which we did. We met him in Carrara and he navigated us up to the quarries, full of information as we went. As the son of a quarryman, he... More

An exciting time. Very unique. Umberto is very knowledgable about the quarry and explains in perfect English. He is amusing and enjoyable to be with. He explains the process and varies it so you see it from a distance, up close in hard hats and later, in the underground quarry.

This tour is seemingly little publicised, but it should be otherwise! It is an amazing glimpse into another world behind the facade of the marble mountains of Carrara! Our guide Heike, was most knowledgable, approachable and professional. Although we were driving some fairly intense 'roads', I always felt sure in Heike's competence. This is not something you could do on... More

Our family of 4 (includes two teen boys) plus my parents (80's) were on a 12 day Mediterranean cruise. It was our first time to the area. I knew we would be seeing a lot of ancient sites/ruins and wanted to "mix it up" a bit and do something different. The quarry tour looked like a great alternative. It was... More

My parents (both in their 80s and can't walk great distances) and I wanted to go to Carrara to see the marble mines, since my father took up sculpting 5 years ago. We are so pleased that we chose to go on a private tour with Umberto Cattani instead of a large group tour. Umberto picked us up at the... More

I've seen beautiful photos of the marble quarries and always wanted to visit. Umberto helped us plan the train in the morning from the Cinque Terre area to Carrara and he picked us up at the train station. My wife, son (7) and I drove with him in his van up the mountain, which didn't take long to reach the... More

Umberto was terrific. I was traveling with my 80 something year old Mom. TA does not have a category for this, by the way. He was full of interesting stories and took us to all of the special places at the quarries. It is an expensive way to go but worth every penny. I would not have been happy with the... More
