The so-called Medieval Village is located just below the Castle of Ourém. Even today, some access is through the old doors in the wall built since the 12th century. The walk through the narrow streets, passing by the old jail, Pelourinho square, the Paço do Conselho building (built in the 15th century), Jardim de Santa Teresa, the Gothic fountain and Porta da Vila, among others, is very pleasant.
Almost all the buildings are very well maintained, even with beautiful gardens and vines, but there are also ruins in some alleys, which makes the walk even more interesting. As it is not very popular with tourists, the visit can be done calmly in a maximum of one hour. The residents and shopkeepers are very friendly and like to provide more information and explanations about the beautiful village.
In September, a promotional festival is organized, with themes that vary each year. The suggestion is to find out about the dates, topics, times and restrictions on local traffic by consulting the Ourém City Council, by telephone (+351) 249 540 900 or on the tourism website. ourem . PT. There is some tourist information available about some buildings and urban signage could be improved.
Highlighting the white houses and some little shops where you can find wine made in the region and local gastronomy items.
For those traveling by car, after visiting the Castle, it is possible to reach the historic part of the town by car via the street that leaves the Castle parking lot, passing in front of it and then going down (at the fork, take the street on the right) . Pre-programming your GPS or smartphone app with the exact location of the Medieval Village can also be interesting.

Small village with an ancient castle. Quietly on a hilltop, offering a nice view over the surroundings. Little old picturesque streets and houses, nice pousada. Certainly worth a visit if you happen to be in the neighborhood. If you do, have lunch or dinner in the Taberna do Castelo, a small but very good and cosy restaurant (see separate review).

We had been to Fatima and our DK guide indicated this town was not far away. What a delight ! It is a fortified hill top town and the views are stunning. The drive up is an experience with hairpins and a narrow entrance but quite safe. The whole town, including the castle, can be walked in an hour or so and it was very quiet - especially as we had left a much visited spot in the morning.

Do not make the mistake of trying to drive through this medieval town! The streets are very narrow, it better to walk to the ruins of the castle above. It is very pretty, with very narrow streets and very few tourists.

To visit the medieval city, from "Ourém" you have to drive into the city of "Ourém" and then follow the signs for "Cidade Medieval", this is going by a narrow but asphalted road with many curves who will take you uphill, once above you have to take a very short turn, and emmidiatly to the richt and so you get to the old town, where you can park your car on the small parking plot. Here you have the Church, an old shop, and the road to the castle and the cemetery, a very beautiful old town, well worth a visit.

I have been coming back to this town every year now for about ten years. I usually stay at Casa Alta Royal Lodge or the local Posada while here. The village sits atop the mountain and is a delight of a place to relax. You can easily walk about the entire village which includes the castle in about twenty minutes and the views are fabulous. There are a couple of local taverns in the village which are a must-do at night. All the locals show up to talk and have a glass or two of the local drink "Ginja" which is a delicious sweet liquor not to be missed. The basic village dates from the 1200's and a lot of the old structures are still there. If you want a quiet spot in the clouds to just relax and take it easy for a while you cannot beat this place.

This medieval town is very similar to the village of St Paul de Venice in France, which is totally packed all year round.
In contrast, there are very few people around in Ourem.
Lovely place to potter around and outstanding views!

This is the most stunning and picture perfect little town I have probably ever been to!
We were staying in Leiria and we visited Ourem as our friends got married in the church there. The church itself is a beautiful building with stunning architecture and is the focal point of the small village.
The journey to get to the town isn't one for the faint hearted, it's perched on a hill and the roads leading to it are small and narrow at times. We arrived by coach and at the end of the journey due to an almost vertical hill to reach the town we had to walk, we had been warned to bring flat shoes though so it wasn't a problem. Don't let this put you off however as once you get there the views are simply breathtaking!
We didn't see as much of the town as I'd have liked as after the church we attended a drinks reception in the gardens of a family restaurant across the road. This along with a couple of places nearby would be a perfect spot to stop and have lunch if you were visiting for the day.

Hi, we plan to go to Fatima by bus from Lisbon. Is there a bus going to Ourem say for just a day tour and then go back to Fatima?
