In my opinion, the best view on Garda is here. Second-best is Arco astle in the north (separate review on this site).
Montecastello is a truly amazing product of human hand. This church is 650 m in altitude, right above the lake. View to east and south side of Garda are great. Right at the botton of the mountain there are plenty of kite surfers on the water.
You can get there by foot or by car - good parking in front of the church. Small front wheels cars with heavy load might find it difficult to drive on the steep roads to the church.

We parked on the main road at the bottom and walked up to the church. It was thirsty work so we were delighted to see a bar at the top. We followed the road up to the cross which took another 20-30 minutes. On the way, there are several stunning viewpoints, although the cross itself is surrounded by trees. There are also information boards detailing how the Italians brought guns and searchlights up to the mountain. Definitely worth doing if you're fit enough. There's not much to see in the church but the bar seating area again has fabulous views of the lake. Worth a visit. Drive up to the church if you can't be bothered walking but the car park isn't huge so at busy times, you might have a wasted journey.

The church and monastery are accesible by car, but we walked all the way from the nearby village of Gardola and Aer (with a baby in a stroller) as there is a sidewalk by the road. The bar on top is a welcome surprice for thirsty visitors.
There is path that leads even further on, to the top of the rock. That part is accessble only by foot and I wouldn't reccomend it to children and to those who are dizzy. The views are stunning, but there is nothing to potect you from falling into the precipice (no fence or rope).

Walked to this place from our apartment in Tignale which took 30 mins. It was a long walk up-hill but once up there the views were amazing. If you want to go into the actual church, you will need to cover up. There's a bar/cafe were you can sit and enjoy the views and a cuppa. (See photo).

Beautiful well presevered church in an amazing location. But if you have a large car plan to park at the bottom and walk up, there are several narrow arches you have to drive through to park near the church and our car did not fit.

Wonderful second visit - a spiritual place, surround the great impressions of the Lake Garda.
It´s also a littkle bar beside. But don´t forget: no shorts in the church, please respect that.
Around are great hiking/walking areas, so you can reach the top of the mountain.

This is an Italian Holy Place, but the ambiance of the Sanctuary was welcoming, friendly, and forgiving to all who, perhaps, did not "know the rules". I had the feeling that everyone was welcome to enjoy the beauty and spirituality of it all. The history is amazing, and it all has been beautifully restored.

You can drive up to Montecastello but we decided to walk . There is a little sanctuary at the bottom of the hill with a beautiful painting. Then as you begin the walk uphill there are the shrines depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. The staircase to the sanctuary was constructed in 1599.You can go behind the altar to see frescoes etc . There is a cafe just before the entrance as you will need a drink once you reach the sanctuary.

Situated just below the summit of Monte Castello the terrace outside the church offers wonderful, panoramic views over Lake Garda. It can be reached by a narrow, winding road; if you choose to approach on foot it's probably about 30 minutes from Gardola village at average walking pace... but it is steep so you may wish to take advantage of some of the seats positioned along the way.
The inside of the church is beautiful with interesting art works and a fascinating portrayal of an ancient battle fought between the people of the area and a vicious marauding bandit and his followers.
There is a small bar on the terrace so it's a lovely, peaceful place to sit in the sun with a cool drink and admire the views over the lake and surrounding hills.
