Google maps stated this was 20 minutes walk from where we were staying in Dorio. It was actually a 1 hour 30 minute walk away, mostly on cobbles and up a steep mountain road. It was however well worth the walk as it is a...More

We were spending a day driving around Lake Como. We had read about the Abbey in a guidebook and decided to pay a visit. The drive to the Abby through a small village and along a cobbled road was very picturesque and when we arrived...More

It takes almost two hours to drive here from Como, but it is worth every minute, assuming you have the constitution for driving on a two lane lakeside road for that amount of time. Still, it is a pleasant and picturesque journey whose payoff is...More

We arrived by ferry, the walk from the boat to the abbey only takes a few minutes. However there are not many boats calling in each day, so you have to be careful timing your visit. We did not think that getting to the abbey...More

We were only in Colico for 24 hours so while my husband was working I drove from Colico to the Abbazia di Pione. The drive is not long (6-10 miles from town center) and pretty well marked. It is quite narrow as you are going...More

Time.....slows.....down.....just as you enter the Abbey. Well preserved. Well maintained. A place of reverence, serenity and history. Worth the visit, just to walk the grounds and enter into the courtyard and chapel.

Boat timings allowed us just over an hour at the Abbazia di Piona. That was sufficient for our purposes, our main interest being in seeing the abbey, and particularly its cloisters, and the ancient well paintings therein. A real sense of history there which certainly...More

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The boat - only one service a day - gave us one hour there. The cloister was peaceful, and the church, and there is a grotto with some pilgrims. The souvenir shop has biscuits and another shop offers liqueurs....More

I would say you do need a car as there is no lodging within walking distance of this attraction

There are regular ferry boats, every hour as I recall, that serve a number of towns around the lake. Think of it as mini-cruise to see the lake rather than a shuttle.
