Collected at 3.30am to catch sunrise at the top of one of he peaks. There are jeeps galore heading up there and many tourists. The drive up is quite fun though with some steep inclines the jeep conquers. Once arrive it's a very short walk,...More

What a wonderful morning to see sunrise between the mountain. But you better wear warm suite because the weather is very cold in the morning.

Mount Bromo is a place to view the Milky Way and sunrise viewing is a mandatory activity, however touristy it is. However, weather is a deal breaker. It was raining continuously while we were there. So no sunrise and no Milky Way. That’s how it...More

I blame myself for this. I didn't do enough research. Ready? So we got to Probilingo by train and all of the sudden the foreigners all disappeared into their rides and there we are all alone, no taxis or clear ways to get to the...More

Strongly recommend to see the sunrise here. It's divine. It's not a difficult walk/hike to the crater. Although you got to walk through the sea of sands. You can also consider taking the horse (but you will still have to climb the stairs yourself), or...More

I went here as a youngster and have now brought back my family. It was totally worth it and the experience entirely different. Back then there were few tourists and we saw the sunrise. This time we went by daylight the day when they celebrate...More

PAYMENT TO TOUR OPERATORS UPFRONT (PROS & CONS): There are many tourists looking for tour operators who can offer payment to be made during arrival as they do not want to pay anything upfront for fear that the operator might not be a genuine operator and abscond with the money after they received payment upfront. Often such operators ask for payment either by TT transfer into their bank account or by way of credit card or by western union transfer. However, there are reports about tourists being stranded or abandoned at Surabaya Airport when their guide didn't show up for their pick up. After making some calls, the unfortunate tourists found out that their tour was cancelled because they did not make any advance payment and their tour was not guaranteed. After further investigation, it was found out that the agent had actually picked up another group of tourists who had made payment with higher fees. All the hotels booked by the operator were then given to that group of tourists. The unfortunate tourists who were abandoned had to find other ways to go to Mt Bromo and also find ways to book the hotels when they arrived and the situation got worst when all the hotels at Mt Bromo were fully booked as it was a high season period. Such unfortunate tourists were left with no hotel accomodation arranged and have to cancel their tour to Mount Bromo with disappointment and frustration. This is a very ugly situation faced by these innocent tourists just because they did not make full payment to the tour operator. So after discussing with various parties and getting feedbacks from tourists who had these bad experiences, it pays to say that it is better to make full payment in advance to any tour operator before you arrive. The only way to secure your booking with full payment is by paying via PAYPAL. It has been gaining huge followings nowadays that according to some local tour operators in Java, tourists nowadays are more prepared to make payment upfront via PAYPAL as PAYPAL guarantees and protects the buyers or payees. If there is a problem (like the incident above) all the payee has to do is to make a complaint to PAYPAL and PAYPAL will freeze the account of the tour operator until the dispute between the tourists and the (bad) tour operator is resolved. Usually with the incident of tourists being abandoned by the tour operator, PAYPAL will insist that the tour operator make full refund to the tourists before they would un-freeze their PAYPAL account. This protection method provided by PAYPAL is effective and works for most tourists who are making upfront payments to tour operators in order to secure their bookings. So PAYPAL will be the BEST SOLUTION for any tourists who wish to engage a local tour operator while not knowing the operator's credibility and authenticity in providing genuine volcano tour in Java. HOW TO KNOW WHETHER YOU HAVE GOT A RELIABLE TOUR OPERATOR Another method to know whether a local tour operator is authentic or reliable is to get a reputable tour company with proper track record. You can easily check their records and their credibility by reading all the reviews posted in their page at Tripadvisor, see all the photos of their guests in their facebook page and read up their website and see whether they provide lots of information about trekking, transportation, payment policy, write up about their tours, whether any reviews posted by their guests, and whether any photos posted at their website to justify their authenticity. To some extent these are all evidence of authenticity and reliability. I hope the above articles I found help. Beside all the things you need to be aware of in engaging a tour operator in Java, Mount Bromo is still a wonderful adventure that one should do it once in a lifetime. Have a wonderful trekking time at Mount Bromo if you are there finally.
