To assist with ship navigation, a temporary lighthouse was positioned on Lady Elliot Island in 1866. It toppled in a severe storm in 1872 and in 1873 a new light station was established. Standing at approximately 17 metres, the white and red lighthouse you see today was pre-made in England and shipped to the Island in pieces. It was the first lighthouse in Australia with a timber frame and weatherproof cast iron external cladding. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1995 when it became too short for the surrounding vegetation and a new solar powered, fully automated tower was built. Lady Elliot Island lightstation was placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004. It is also significant because it represents an important landmark indicating the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Lady Elliot Island Lightstation Heritage Management Plan was developed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in March 2012 to protect, conserve and manage the Commonwealth Heritage values of the Lady Elliot Island lightstation. At this stage, the lighthouse is not open to the public but is often the focus of history and photography buffs.

Lighthouses, they don't make them like they used to.

Worth a look, although closed access to the top. The old light house is well maintained and offer start contrast to the new lighthouse. They don't make them like they used to.

You can have a glass of wine or a beer after your dive or snorkel as from 5.30pm the golf cart will come round with a mini bar so you can watch the sun set, magic. August is the month to watch the Humpback Whale migration so sometimes you can see them breaching in the distance

Do the Night Stalk and learn more about the Lighthouse Keepers. This original lighthouse was designed in Uk of metal plates and built around a wooden staircase. Not seen one like this before.

You must have a sunset drink at the lighthouse beach - well worth it. Whilst watching the sun go down at low tide we watched a reef shark swimming about in the shallow water - the British tourists sure got a hit out of that.

A fantastic location for visitors to meet up to sit on the beach and watch the sunset with a drink. These can be pre-ordered for collection at the beach or, failing that, staff bring out a stock (albeit limited) of beers and wine for purchase (or for billing to your room). The lighthouse itself is just that, a lighthouse. We... More
