Really nice

Iceland is country of waterfalls. I have never seen as many amazing waterfalls within such a short period of time.
The Grundarfoss Waterfall is just another golden example.

Lovely falls
Sep. 2018 • Couples
Grundarfoss is a lovely falls in the middle of a mossy bed, just off Road 54 (about 27 km west on 54 from the intersection of the road north to Stykki). There is a sign by the road, and parking lot. There is a large gate that you can see at the parking lot, and a smaller, less obvious gate to the left, which is unlocked... go through this gate and make sure to close and secure it behind you. There is a path that starts out as a car track, and comes to what looks like a small power station with signs to keep out.. skirt left on the track in front of this toward the river made by the falls. There will be a narrow trail at this point, which hugs another fence on the right side of the river.. go toward the falls on this trail.. you will cross the water twice on large wet rocks, and end up on the left side of the river where there is an even more narrow trail that leads quite close to the base of the falls. I took a different trail on the way back, and it landed me in a field waaay down the river, with no obvious way to cross.. I finally found a flat enough area to cross, so didn’t have to back track, but I would recommend going back to the parking lot the way you came.

The falls are quite lovely, in a scattered cascade down a face of basalt columns. Not huge, but pretty. The walk to them takes about 20 minutes through sheep and horse fields, and while initially pretty flat, quickly diminishes to narrow and rocky.. I would recommend good hiking boots with ankle support, and at least an hour to hike out and back and look around a bit.

Nice stop but can't get very close
Jun. 2018 • Couples
We took the hike back to see this waterfall, as staying the area. Its about a 3/4 to a mile hike back along a fence and river. It had been raining that day so it was muddy in some areas and had to cross a small stream at one point Overall its a nice waterfall, but I am not sure i would have done it had we not been staying in the town. The hike didn't seem worth it, especially when you couldn't get really close. Their may have been a way to get closer, but I think it required crossing the larger river there and wasn't possible that day.
