The beach was great...just the right amount of people...quiet but not empty. The water was beautiful. We rented a jet ski from Ellis. He was professional and friendly and took his time to show us the ropes. He was patient with us and courteous. Highly recommend him.

I'm not sure if the beach is always that pristine of just a testament to the resorts that line Maxwell Beach. Some of the finest pure white sands situated on a gentle sloping shore into the azure turquoise of the Caribbean Sea that I've seen in a long time. The fine sand seems to be always cool and soft to the touch making it an easy beach to walk. One of the few beaches I'd seen recently that seems to not be severely effected by erosion. Warm clear water lined with the same fine sand makes Maxwell Beach ideal for swimming.

This beach is a calmer beach in the area because the city put rocks to slow down the rough waves coming into shore because in Barbados the waves are bigger than most islands. It is a nice area to rent a condo, quieter less noise because the condos are far away from the noisier areas like Oistins or even St. Lawrence Gap.

I have been coming to maxwell beach for the last 6-7 years. It was one of the best beaches on the south coast. A long strip of pristine white sand shared by two hotels. Yes it has waves, not the lappy type you get on the west coast but real waves. I have been taken out by them on occasions - you just have to treat them with respect.
But apparently the Americans can't cope with waves so sandals, who have bought the hotel at the end of the beach have decided to destroy the long pristine beach. They are building a set of breakwaters and lagoons to create lappy waves so their American clientele can paddle. The beach is destroyed.
Unfortunately they have picked the one time to do this when the seaweed has come and the breakwater is stopping it clearing off as the current moves along the beach and then off the end of the island. As a result the lappy lagoons are cesspits of rotting seaweed.
So well done sandals for destroying what was a fantastic beach you have a big apology to make to Barbados and just remember there are no private beaches is Barbados you don't own it.

Stayed at Sea Breeze which has direct access to the beach. Although the beach is not private it is mainly used by hotel guests. The hotel has lots of sunbeds mostly with pull over canopies which were very comfortable. The sea has waves but when we were there they were not so rough to stop you going in. The beach has powder white sand and is clean.

If you are looking to swim I would go to the west coast of the island. This beach is great for sun bathing, but can become very rough. Overall, the beach is clean and not overly crowded. If you are bringing your children here make sure to keep an eye on them in the water.

When folks travel to Barbados, tourists tend to focus on Accra or Crane Beach. Of course we checked those beaches out, along with many others. But ultimately we kept coming back to this one. We happen to run into it by happenstance because our Air BnB was right next to this place. My husband and I are budget travelers and we tend to stick around places where we can stretch our dollar. This beach, otherwise known as Butterfly beach, was perfect. It's right next to Oistins, where you can walk about 7 minutes for cheap, delicious, island style food. $2 beers (Barbados dollars) are common in Oistins! I recommend you do what we did: buy a cheap floatie from where ever you are traveling from (we went to Target), pack it in your luggage, and inflate it at the beach, but not before buying some rum at the grocery store about 5 blocks away, and hang out and ride the chill vibes till you get hungry for fish tacos!

Absolutely fantastic, clean beach, one of the most beautiful on the west coast of Barbados! Go try to catch the sea turtles coming out of the water at night!

Thank you for your report on TripAdvisor. We´re planning a trip to Barbados & the hotel Bougainvillea Barbados as well and we would like to know if it´s possible to WALK to St. Lawrence Gap - or - do we have to get there by car or bus (we know it´s not that far away, right ?) ?

Is there anywhere to rent beach umbrellas, etc. on this beach? If so, what is the cost? Are there any restaurants in this area?
Written November 9, 2017
I never saw any chairs to rent on this stretch of beach. There are plenty of places to eat along the road across from the beach.

Maxwell beach is not "semi private" but very public, although the big hotels want you to stay away
Written August 15, 2016
I would say yes to semi private
Open to public but they do not tend to use this beach

Just stayed 2 weeks at the Rostrevor in St. Lawrence Gap. Right on the ocean . Beautiful. Huge pool and nice small beach in front. Lots of places to eat and small stores for groceries.

Is it quite close to local entertainment or secluded etc?
Written January 5, 2015
Hi - St Lawrence's gap is approx 5 min away by car, Rockley and Hastings about 10 mins and Bridgetown is 15 mins away. In the other direction is is oistins which is 4 mins. If you are not driving there are reggae buses every 10 mins or so on the main road and the state buses as well. Each charges 3bd per journey - be careful on the state buses you have to have the exact money they don't give change. Don't be scared to use the reggae buses they do jam you in but the drivers do tend to look after the tourists.
In the gap there are several restuarants, a sugar hut night club, Irish pub and street stalls. At the other end by the divi hotel there is a Chinese and some bars.
In Rockley there is Berts sports bar which is brill, good value, clean and nice staff.

4 adults are coming to Barbados on 24th January and are staying in the Sea Breeze Beach hotel, can youy tell us something about it please?
Written January 5, 2015
Good morning, I usually stay at the Butterfly which is next door, Sea Breeze has a lovely stretch of beach, at low tide you can walk/wade past the Butterfly to another part of Maxwell beach, both sides have nice swimming conditions, small waves clear blue water, powder white sand, with the odd turtle popping up for a look. 10 min walk from Oistins fish fry which is brilliant for lunch or dinner 7 days a week and very cheap (local catch mahi mahi, sword fish, marlin etc.. cheap beer, buy rum by the bottle or half bottle works out much cheaper, Charlies bar and grill is just over the road form you, don't expect the Ritz, but they can turn out good food, cheap drinks and plays 60's 70's and 80's music, if you get the right crowd it's a good night Charlie is a great host if he's not too well on. There is also a Chinese across the road and upstairs, take away or sit in, large portions, you are about 20 min walk or 5 min by z bus stops out side your hotel front, to the St Lawrence Gap where there are hundreds of eateries 5 star to street food. Beaches in your area are Enterprise (Miami) this is just past Oistins 5 min by z bus this is very popular with mr delish van for cheap eats. You also have dover beach with is popular with lots of eateries, this is at the Gap. secluded beaches to visit must have car or tour taxi are Crane beach, Foul Bay (my fav, its like something out of a bounty advert, and also Bottom bay which is also very beautiful, I would also recommend a trip to Huntes gardens check out on trip advisor. hope you all have a fab time. Hope this helps...
