Stagehead Carving Shop is a small shop across the road from Hedderson's grocery store in lovely downtown Griquet, Newfoundland. Route 436 is the road to L'Anse aux Meadows. Norman Young, the carver, is a delightfully charming person with sparkling eyes and a most delightful personality. His carvings in old Whalebone and Moose antler are first class. Some of the best whale bone is old, often extracted from a beach or even from among the bushes. According to Norman the best whale bone for carving is of 50 + years maturity (Sounds like me!). Antlers, of course, are shed annually. He has a wonderful display of his carvings--many akin to those found in the Arctic--including his prize carvings (not for sale) such as his Viking sword carved from a swordfish's sword. If he's not in his shop, Norman is either in his carving studio or across the road at the grocery store. This is noe grat place to consider a seriously excellent souvenir from Newfoundland.

We were looking for some good quality souveniers and we found the right spot. Amazing and high quality of carvings (we met the artist in the store) in whale bone and caribou antlers. Also a whole cabinet of jewelry (Celtic and Viking). There other Viking related items. We enjoyed the store and bought a number of items.

It has changed names as the children have taken over the business but the carvings are still there along with plenty more. Well worth a stop. Books, jewelry, carvings and more.

We planned a trip to this area in August specifically because of the Viking settlement. Our son loves Vikings, so this trip was a dream for him. He didn’t buy any souvenirs elsewhere because we had planned to stop at the Viking Shop before leaving the area, only to find it closed. I called the number and the owner was in St. Anthony set up to meet a cruise ship. It was terribly disappointing for us, because we had specifically checked the hours online and planned to visit at this particular time on our last morning in the area. All this to say, the shop looks so wonderful, but you may want to call ahead to confirm their hours if you’re on a tight schedule.

Stopped at the Viking shop to do a little shopping. The gentleman that was there the first day was very polite and knowledgeable. We bought souvenirs at the shop for our grandkids on our second day that we stopped to visit. And tell everyone how much we enjoyed their area.

Worth a stop if you want to see more than the typical craft offerings. Beautiful bone carvings displayed by the shop's founder are surrounded by a lovely variety of folk art pieces. Even if you aren't shopping, the place is worth a look. Plus, it smells wonderful.

Thanks so much for dropping by, our whole idea for the shop was to be able to offer something a little different than the usual. I am glad that you found it interesting.
Again, thanks for the lovely review and as the Vikings say, SKAL!!!

We just had to stop while driving through and were fortunate enough to meet the gentleman who began the endeavor.
Such a warm, welcoming shop with a wide variety of goods at great prices.
It was a pleasure to meet him again in costume at L'Anse Aux Meadows the next day.
Very worthy of a stop when in the area.

This is a family operation and the carving work is gorgeous. Even if you aren't in the market I would strongly suggest stopping in to admire the craftsmanship.
The young lady that was working was very friend and answered any questions we had.
You Gotta Stop Here.

Great place to stop and chat with the sculptor. He liberates pieces from whale bones and soapstone. Friendly visit. You can catch his work in lots of shops in the area. Great break from the road.

A very talented craft person who knows his trade, and as great skills. He proudly displays his work. If you want a quality reminder of your time in Newfoundland, knowing it was locally produced, and helping someone to continue to make their home in Newfoundland, make a stop here.

Is Norman Young Indigenous or does he just depict Indigenous people in his carvings? I can not find this information anywhere.
