About
Situated at the Heart of the Battle of the Somme (1914/1918), the Somme 1916 Museum of ALBERT traces the lives of soldiers in the trenches during the Franco-British offensive in 1916. At 10 meters below ground and 250 meters in length, you will discover realistic and grasping scenes of the daily lives of our soldiers. Mannequins are brought to life through twelve realistic scenes transporting you to the past. Time passes but the memory remains. The museum is translated into 4 languages using panels (French-English-Dutch–German), and can also be guided by one of our guides in any of these languages.

This museum contains some interesting exhibits, but it is dated and doesn’t attemp to give the visitor an overall understanding of the battle or the war. The video consists of drone shots of various monuments in their current state, unlike other museums, which provide better historical detail. I don’t regret spending the time or money, but am glad we hit three other museums during our tour of the battlefield.

Stumbled across this museum while in Albert, looks small from the outside, but it’s like a tardis! Just WOW!! So worth the money, full of interesting artefacts & information.

You are taken through tunnels with artefacts relating to the trenches of WWI. Very informative, very moving, a Museum that should be on everyone's number one list.

This is a very unusual location for a museum, as most of it is contained in an underground tunnel. The staff are friendly, and the exhibition information is very comprehensive in both French and English.
Personally, the exhibits were too overwhelming for me as they concentrated on the gruesome weapons of the Great War. Too be expected, probably, but it is unrelenting.
The gift shop at the end of the museum (which you have to go through one way only) has a very wide range of souvenirs, from the usual snacks, fridge magnets, and books to...actual kit recovered from the regions' battlefields. Yes, you can buy the medals, uniform buttons, lighters, compasses, binoculars, helmets of the men who fought so bravely a century ago. I did not like this at all! Show these items, but it is wrong to sell them to individuals.

A surprise find, the Musee Somme was interactive and most informative. Was a great place to visit, and educational too.

This underground museum helps bring to life the horror of this war. The numerous artifacts and weapons of destruction have been recovered from this very area. It is worth the nominal fee.

I visit the Somme area regularly and every time i do, i make sure to see the museum.
Its fantastic subterranean displays accurately depict life of all sides in the western-front theatre of war. The amount of rare artefacts they have on show is astonishing, many of the items can only be seen in this museum!
The staff are all extremely friendly and make you feel very welcomed, and they have extremely knowledgeable bilingual tour guides who do an amazing job of telling the story of the Somme. You can actually book these guides to take you around the battlefields to educate you about the history. I strongly feel that you can't go and visit the Somme battlefields without a visit to the museum- not just to learn the history of those who fought there, but to experience it through original artefacts and antiques which have never left the area. The building itself is even a site to behold as its located in a tunnel underneath Albert which was used for an air raid shelter during the second world war.
I would definitely recommend a visit here, the experience is worth way more than the cheap admission price.

Visited Albert as part of an organised battlefields tour of the Somme region - entry into the museum included. Very good and informative displays providing insight and context for the experiences of the soldiers who served during World War 1. Number of artefacts displayed with dugout reconstructions etc. Fascinating to see and enhances your appreciation of the experiences of those who fought. Would recommend.

My husband and I decided to visit this museum when exploring The Somme area.
It is a very informative and interesting. As other reviews have mentioned, our self-guided tour started by descending numerous steps into a tunnel below the basilica. It begins with a 3D film, followed by a very long tunnel (air raid shelter) containing information and artefacts of the war.
This should be a compulsory visit for everyone to learn about the tragic loss of life due to war.
I cannot say that I enjoyed the museum as it is such an emotional subject, but people should really visit just to experience how lucky we are.

Good morning,
Is it possible to visit the museum during this covid period? I think we will visit the area next weekend (if it is worthy with opened museums).
Kind regards

What are the open times on Jun 14 2017 as I would like to bring 24 students and 4 teachers. Is there a discount for students and teachers and what would the price of entry be.
Written November 10, 2016
The museum is open 7 days a week, apart from closure over Xmas & New Year, from 9am until 5pm. There are discounts for groups, we were a party of 12 & the price worked out at around €5.50. If any of your students are under 18 years old, they can go in for child prices. Enjoy your visit, we did!
Written November 11, 2016
It stays open until 18:00. But I would advise you get there before 16:00 (even earlier if possible) as there is a lot to see all very interesting and worth the visit.
