At the heart of Lyons-la-Forêt, this remarkable covered market (first documental in the 14th century) was entirely renovated in the 18th century thanks to the Duke de Penthièvre, grand-child of Louis XIV and last lord of Lyons. It is also famous for being the spot of shooting for "Madame Bovary" movie, directed by Claude Chabrol. Craft market early June. Flowers Day first week-end of July. Apple Day early October. On thursday, saturday and sunday morning, enjoy its typical french market. From spring to automn, regular art exhibitions also take place in its cellar.

I had seen the covered market in pictures and in films and I wanted to see it for myself. It is beautiful and a clear reminder of our village life used to center around the market. The building is in excellent shape. We also took...More

Centered in the middle of the small village, it is practically impossible to miss it. It id indeed unique in style and blends beautifully with the traditional style of the village.

The most beautiful villages of France are a category that may be in the eye of the beholder or as part of a cultural marketing program for small towns. Most that have earned the reputation are well worth visiting. As we entered the town for...More
