Henrik Ibsen came to Grimstad in 1843/44 to start his apprenticeship with apothecary Reimann. He stayed for 6 years, and when he left in spring 1850 it was as the author of the play "Catilina". The museum focus on the period before he achieved success and world fame. Topics such as how Ibsen made a living when his apprenticeship ended, his dire financial situation, the people who inspired him, the love stories and the son born out of wedlock all form part of the exhibition. The very pharmacy in which Ibsen worked is still intact. A museum shop is available.

People in Grimstad understood the importance of taking care of the place where Henrik Ibsen lived and worked a few, but important years. The pharmacy and several rooms are as they were then, and many artifacts tell important details from Ibsens time in Grimstad.

This is a little museum with an interesting guide. It gives you a sense of how Ibsen lived and what inspired his work. The town is small but lovely and both together give an insight into his plays.

It is a simple little part of Henrik Ibsen's life, but it is the foundation of the man. It is in this environment that he matured. It is not just the museum that is important, but the place. You are able to walk the same...More

As Ibsen lived and worked here for many years, and also is the place where he wrote "Catilina", his first novel, it's a fine place for a museum. The entrance costs 80 NOKs with guide included (if available). A guide shouldn't even be necessary, as...More

The whole thing is just terribly boring.... The guide is good tho, but it seems more like a bad excuse for a museumMore
