Fab place to witness

I love canals and locks so this was a special place to visit. We didn't see a boat going through as we got there quite late.

We visited on a Sunday lunchtime. I’d expected there to be a lot of people but the folk there were going about their day, just as we were. It is a beautiful place steeped in history. There’s a lot of hazards to be aware of so not suitable for young children.

Great view from the top
Sep. 2018
Bingley easy to get to on the train for a good day out . Nice steady walk from the station to the Five Locks, with a superb view from the top after, as you would expect , a fairly steep climb. Being reasonably warm we enjoyed a jacket potato outside a rather excellent choice café,followed by an ice cream on the way down. Lovely sedate lifestyle for the" bargee" people

Famous Five .... Rise Locks !
Aug. 2018 • Friends
Bingleys hidden gem. Beautiful Bingleys famous 5 rise locks. Stunning views from the top .... if you’re brave enough to stand on one of the small bridges over a lock when it is filling you’ll be mesmerised by the thrill of seeing all the water surging through. During the summer and at weekends you are likely to see boats passing through and older children may be encouraged to help open the gates . There are lovely walks in either direction along the canal towpath although the slope by the locks is obviously very steep. There is a nice cafe at the top of the locks. There is no designated parking so either park in Crossflatts or along Fairfax Road Bingley.

Historical locks
Aug. 2018 • Couples
The Bingley Five Locks is a delightful place to spend a few hours or even an afternoon. We were lucky to have been able to watch three boats transition through. I took a time lapse video and it turned out real well. There is a nice cafe located next to it called The Five Locks Cafe. It’s a great place to have a drink and watch everything happening.

The parking can be tricky but there is room on the street in residential areas or by the allotment. Check it out.

As it's on my patch, I'm a regular visitor and it never fails to be delightful. But to get the best out of your visit, try to go when there are barges using the facility, during the warmer months of the year.

Going Down...
May 2018
We popped over to Bingley for a quick half hour just to see the locks but it turn into a great interactive experience. Our children were able to assist in dropping down a canal boat through all 5 stages. Really friendly staff, fantastically fun and educational for the kids as it sparked a massive industrial revolution conversation. Well done Bingley team! If we had more time it would have great to have walked or cycled to the next set of locks too. Lovely spot.

Sunday bike ride.
Aug. 2017 • Family
Nice sunny sunday afternoon. Bikes out and and a family ride along the canal to the 5 rise locks.
Lovely ride along a nicely maintained canal path. Passed a couple smaller locks on the way.
On arriving, the hill up the locks took the wind out of me so we had a leisurely walk up. Loads of tourists milling around admiring the architecture and scenery. There were a couple of barges coming down so we had a watch. Fascinating to see the locks in action. So much work and skill much have been used building them all those years ago. A credit to the waterways for the condition they are in now and how well maintained they are. The kids sat watching enthralled. Doesn't happen often. Finished off with a cuppa at the cafe at the top. Spent a good hour just enjoying the ambience of the place.
If you visiting or touring the area its certainly well worth a visit.

Hard to locate but worth the effort.lots to amuse the visitor watch boats going up and down. Free entertainment and everyone is friendly. Take something to feed the ducks and geese. Have reasonably priced snacks at the waterside café.then walk the short distance to Three Rise. An oasis of calm
