This is a wide lake which is divided by a bridge/causeway. You pass this lake when you drive from the south (after viewing Marathon ostensibly) and head north to Thermopylae. This is part of the scenic route to Thermopylae. From the homes and small towns in the lake area, it seemed to us that it was a vacation retreat kind... More

A large man made lake since the 30s of the last century . A Dam is built for water collection , providing water necessity for the city . breath-taking views from the café terasse overlooking the lake . a must visit when in Marathona , a 4 minutes drive from centre of Athens

The Marathon lake was built around 85 years ago by an American company and it is supplying some of the water Athens uses. The dam is an impressive pieceof enginering. 85 years later and there are obvious leaks. It is beautiful to watch and walk around it. There is also a nice cafe on the side which seems to be... More

Just the spot to enjoy nature and marvel at the artful intervention of humans. The dame is the largest marble dam on earth. The lake is the holding containment for the water supply for all of Attica. You can sit at the Fragma cafe and enjoy a surreal view of water, moonlight and natures flora and fauna. There are ducks... More

This was such an unexpected find in Greece, just out of central Athens, a very beautiful and relaxing spot, you feel like you're in Northern Europe by the lakes, simply amazing. Great picnic spot

Driving through a very picturesque landscape you can have a really different time just some 48 km outside Athens. This technically man-made in 1931 lake, is big enough to relax someone's eye for good, after a noisy touring between so many antiquities all over Attica. This Lake was enough to provide water the whole Athens for 30 whole years (when... More

This is a very nice lake with a cozy cafe and nearby taverns. If you are lucky, you might have the chance to do some bird watching early in the morning or late in the evening. The forest however is now growing again, due to the recent fires.
