Life as it existed in this ancient Greek settlement (5th century B.C.) was frozen in time when rivers of hot mud flowed down its streets from an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

Visited Herculaneum when staying in Sorrento. Took the local train to the ruins. The place is usually busy but we were lucky it was a bit quieter than normal . When inside Herculaneum it was very hot with no breeze at all. Don't let this...More

We have recently been to Herculaneum and what can I say, this is an amazing place to visit, we previously went to Pompeii but this was lots better, it is smaller but more preserved, lots of mosaics still kin place, you could walk around a...More

If you have the time, visit Herculanium and Pompeii. The contrast between the better preserved Hurculanium is history before your eyes. The better preserved buildings/mosaics/frescos, fewer tourists and no touts/scammers give this the edge. The fast train from Sorentto 12€ and entry without guide 11€...More

The ruins were very over-priced because all the best ones were closed or inaccessible as roads to them were closed. No warning when we paid full price for the ticket and no staff on site - I think that they retreat somewhere when there are...More

We visited Herculaneum on a beautiful sunny day having just stepped off the plane. The parking was fairly easy to find and is right next to the ruins. The site is amazing and well worth a visit. The fresco's on the walls are stunning and...More

Everybody knows Pompeii but there are five villages "frozen" in time by Vesuvius: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae and Boscoreale. The pyroclastic wave and the material which covered quickly the town preserved various objects and skeletons of people waiting for a rescue ship. It's another view...More

For me this site had an edge over Pompeii as it was less busy, smaller scale and more space to explore without getting in the way of others. Take plenty of water and/or snacks when it's hot so you can make the most of your...More

More intact than Pompeii, but much smaller, and for that reason, a little less impressive. Also, rather less loved and maintained than Pompeii

This place was amazing! The ruins here just blew us away. Because it's slightly less known than Pompeii, there's less people and the ruins here are even in a little bit better shape. Amazing place, if you're in this region definitely a can't miss!

We chose to visit Herculaneum in the morning because we were staying in Ercalano - where the ruins are sited. I would suggest morning, as early as you can as it gets busy later. The ruins are a 5-10 minute walk straight down... More
