Bought a ticket to the monastery and was insistently told we and to buy the 110rmb ticket with shuttle bus to go there. The shuttle is very short and you still and to take a cab/bus to the entrance, whilst the monastery is nice but definitely not worth the money. Take the local public bus you can still visit around... It's a must if you are visiting Shangri-la, beat view from the monastery facing the mountains. Reminds me of Potala in Lhasa,Tibet. Take your time while visiting the monastery and enjoy the feeling. Only 10 min drive from the old town.

The more common spelling of this place, seen on signs everywhere is Songzanlin Monastery. This was the highlight of my short trip to Shangri-la.  It offered an interesting glimpse of Tibetan monastery life in nice surroundings with a lake and mountains. From the old town, it was a short bus ride (number 3) to the site's boundary/ticket office building. Entrance... More

One of my dreams is to see the Potala Monastery in Lhasa, after the visit of Sumtsaling Monastery I feel that dream is in part filled. Despite the fact that is amazing as u can read from the many comments here I would like to explain how to go there and how it works, since I read some comments telling... More

Essential a must-do when you are in this region - this monastery is a good introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and prologue for your future travel to Tibet, Bhutan etc. (though each is probably different in each own right). However, similar to other attractions in most parts of China, admissions fees are steep.

The Ganden Sumtseling Monastery (噶丹松贊林, also called Sumtseling Monastery) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located around 5 km (3.1 mi) from Shangri-La City at elevation 3,380 m (11,089 ft) in Yunnan province, China. The original monastery was built in 1679 but was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution by Mao's Red Guard. The one we see today was rebuilt in 1983.... More

If you are in the area, you need to visit this monastery, although the entrance fee of almost US$ 20 is quite steep. Avoid the monastery if you have already extensively traveled in Tibet (such as Lhasa) or you know similar monasteries already from other places such as Nepal. Note that this is not quite a historic site, since the... More

Take bus 3 from the town. It will stop at the ticketoffice were you need to buy your ticket. Then you will be transported with a touristbus to the monastery. On the way back you can take bus 3 directly, because it continues for locals. 1 yuan for the bus. Try to go up to the roof from the building... More
