Dominated by the Basillica, a very quaint town, with local street stores and delicious restaurants. A small church carved into the side of the sheer rock, with a tunnel carved through to reach.

Great place.

All the tourist books mention that this is a great place to go, which unfortunately means it is absolutely chocka with tour parties, school trips and the like. Add a mishmash of poor parking plots and no organisation and it was a bit of a mess.

Granted the Basillica s a lovely looking building but as they suddenly closed the doors because of an event, we didn’t get to look inside.

The setting of the place on between the mountains is great. Otherwise it is a mystery why so many tourists flock there. Most of the buildings, including the church, are modern. So, little historical interest. Nothing else to offer expect mainstream religious practices. Unless you are into this, stay away.

Beautiful buildings and setting …. despite the crowds this is a very quiet and spacious place. Lots of cafes and restaurants and there’s also a gift shop. Finding a parking space can be very difficult so arrive early

Tucked way in the mountainside away from the basilica is a small chapel. The work to create the area is something to behold. The view up from below the chapel is majestic as a waterfall runs just beneath.

Whether arriving from below, above or directly in front of the basilica offers a unique picture. The sheer size mixed with the setting makes this a unique church. The stain glass windows offered unique lighting within the church. Overall a very pleasant experience.

This is a working church - it regularly celebrates Mass and although it is also a major tourist attraction, there is very little information inside. This is where “normal” people come to worship. It is a beautiful building that glows when the sunlight hits it and seems beautifully placed, sitting high up in the glorious scenery, visible as you toil along the twisty roads up to the site.

However, it is also a tourist attraction, and many of the tourists are very disrespectful. Despite a pictograph sign showing a mobile phone with a line through it and a camera with a line through it, there were (of course) tourists snapping away with their noisy DLRs and shouting on their phones - Spanish isn’t the easiest language but “Silencio!” on a huge sign is pretty easy to understand....and completely ignored. Not that it matters too much - the Basilica had its doors wide open and the square in front seemed to be popular with marauding bikers as a “who can rev their bike the loudest” competition site, so you could hardly hear yourself think anyway.

There is a large tourist shop immediately next door selling various branded items including clothes - there are items on hangers for you to try on, but the item you are given at the counter is pre packaged. Please be careful as they seem to be quite different sizes - for example the medium sized sample hooded top is both much larger - and much warmer - than the medium sized packaged top - which is going to result in an annoying return journey!

Fascinating little place and worth a few moments of your time, maybe more if you’re religious. It is worth a look though and some great views of the surrounding area too.

Quiet and calming and plenty to see. It is a lovely setting for a church and well worth a visit, not only the church itself but the views around it too.
