Aveline Museum must be the least publicized museum in the Paris region – the Ile de France. It is as if someone does not want anyone to know about it, to visit it.

As for getting to it? Well, I had to ask at least half a dozen people the way to it once I was in its vicinity. And I speak French, so if you do not, then I will say ‘good luck’ to you.

The museum is in the chic and expensive Saint-Cloud suburb West of Paris. To get to Saint-Cloud is not a problem. The suburb is 9.6 kms – 6 miles - from central Paris.

You get to Saint-Cloud by train from Gare St-Lazare (raiload station). You must take the train that goes to Versailles but you will descend at Saint-Cloud. You will therefore remain in the Paris public transport zone and you will need just the 1.90 euro ticket.

The Metro line 10 will also get you to Saint-Cloud. Again, you will need only the 1.90 euro ticket.

So too will the No.160 bus from Rue de Rivoli. (The bus stop is at the Chatelet end of the street.) The buses are frequent and such a ride will take you about an hour. It is though a route that takes you along the Seine and streets lined with shops and bistros. This ride in itself will be an outing.

Once you are in Saint-Cloud, will you be going by train, Metro or bus, your problem will start when you have to find the museum.

With this I cannot help you. As I said I myself had to ask for directions, and even so, I did find myself walking around in circles. There are no street signs which will direct you to the museum, and when you do eventually find a sign, you will be almost on top of the museum.

I had taken the No. 160 bus and went to the end of the line, the stop having been General-LeClerc in Boulogne Saint-Cloud. I then walked up a hill and another hill and another hill, not knowing whether I was going in the right direction.

I can only repeat that you would have to ask passers-by for directions.

If you do however persevere after having read this review of mine, the museum is really worth a visit.

The museum is in a white mansion, the Villa Brunet, which is within a small park. The address is No. 60 Rue Gounod.

The villa, mansion rather, dates from 1935 when the wealthy biologist Daniel Brunet had it built for his family. It has housed the Aveline Museum since 1988, Monsieur Brunet having passed away in 1943.

Since then, each year, a temporary exhibition is held in the house.

The current one is of the paintings of the Dubufe artists: Claude-Marie 1790/1864 (the grandfather), Edouard1819/1883 (the son) and Guillaume 1853/1909 (the grandson). The three were portrait painters.

The exhibition is known as La Peinture en heritage (1790-1909).

One is not allowed to take photos inside the museum, but I could and did take photos of the splendid house.

The exhibition opened on March 15 and will run through to June 24.

There is no entry charge, and the staff are very friendly.

I will end by wishing you the best of luck in finding the house.

Opened fairly recently, this Museum is housed in an astonishing, neo-classical (Greco-Roman style) townhouse dating from 1935 and surrounded by a lovely and peaceful park.
