Although this is a National Trust property, it has very limited access. It used to be even worse, so although we've lived nearby for many years, it's only recently we got to visit. It's not just interesting in its own right as an early British example of Modernism, but the architect/owner produced a number of other fascinating buildings around the... More

This property is owned by the National Trust and is only open on selected days during the year. Booking can be made at nearby Claremont Gardens. This is a fascinating property possibly best visited in early Autumn when the gardens look magnificent. If you've not visited this little gem then make sure you do soon!

The second visit here and will not be our last! We were the last visit of the year and what a treat it was. Richard and Anne are fountains of knowledge - the best tour guides ever! The Homewood is stunning and we timed our visit perfectly to see the gardens in their Autumn glory (particularly the red acers). Cannot... More

This is an amazing building, designed by a 24 year old architect as his own family home, and years ahead of its time in concept and execution. Built in the Modernist style in 1938 it must have been a revelation to the local population. Its clean lines, uncluttered appearance both inside and out, its minimalist style, the simplicity of its... More

Fine example of 1930s innovative house design tucked away in beautiful gardens. Original period furnishings well presented by knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides.

Not what people think of with the National Trust since its a 1930s example of an early modernist house. But what an example! Money was no object here and the rooms are lavishly furnished in iconic furniture and art from 30s to 70s. No flower garden here but a 20th century landscape park - you get a great view from... Like Orson Welles' masterpiece, Gwynne's first work is his best and for many of the same reasons. Because his parents were his clients, he didn't have to compromise like he would for commercial clients. Realize too that The Homewood doesn't look exactly like it did in 1938. Gwynne lived there all of his life and made continual changes especially to... More

Modernist house designed by architect Patrick Gwynne for his parents. Design influenced by Le Corbusier National Trust property near Claremont Landscape Garden. You must book in advance to visit this property which is still occupied. The guided tour is excellent and lasts for about one hour. The gardens are extensive and carefully planned. Not to be missed.

It's hard to believe that this remarkable and beautiful property was designed by a young 24 year old architect eighty years ago - looks fresh and modern by today's standards. If you like modern architecture its definitely worth seeing - and even if you don't, give it a try. Its beautifully set in a carefully designed garden with stunning contrasts... More

You need to book a visit to the Homewood - you can't just turn up on spec. You do this by phoning the number on its National Trust website. You then need to get to the Claremont Lanscape Garden just outside Esher. A minibus departs from the carpark there and you confirm your booking and pay at the admissions kiosk.... More
