Spello has many beautiful and fascinating sights, and is well worth a visit of several days. For those who come to the Infiorate, I have one tip: make sure to see the flower creations throughout the town *before 5:00pm.* After that, cleaning crews start sweeping away all the flower carpets, and they're gone by 6:00. For all the publicity that's given this annual event beforehand, the city is extremely efficient at removing all trace of it.

I went to Italy in June purposely to visit Spello during the Infiorate realizing it would be warm and humid but willing to put up with any discomfort. I based myself in Foligno since it was close to the train station. Rather than take the train, I decided to walk the six miles to Spello the day before the Infiorate. Once there, I began to walk through the beautiful small town with its winding narrow sloping streets. There were no crowds and it provided me with an excellent way to enjoy this delightful town. The following day, I took the 6am train to Spello hoping to get there before the crowds who were expected to arrive. As I entered the town, I was blown away! The streets I had walked through the day before were now decorated with beautiful floral designs which were awesome. The townspeople work ed all night long on their floral displays. I could not stop taking photos. By 7:30 am the streets were filled with visitors who seemed just as pleased as I was at what they were seeing. I could not stop taking photos. I stayed in Spello for two hours and took the short train ride back to Foligno extremely contented.

A perfect escape for travelers wanting to experience a beautiful Umbrian town with out the hordes of tourist groups.
We spent the afternoon here to explore this little town, every corner you turn, every cobblestone path you walk into... A lovely surprise awaits you.
Surprises can be a view, or long narrow cobblestone paths lined with rows of beautiful flowers and climbing to the top has breathtaking views of the Umbrian hill sides. The gelaterria we stopped into had the typical gelato flavors and the quality superb.

So this is the story of the Infiorate, I bought a ticket for the parking on the 1st of June 2022, 10€ for the 19th of June. This morning we arrived at the parking lot and parked the car, we are visiting with our 7 month old boy who can't walk and need a stroller, we put the baby on the stroller right in front of the parking valet that didn't told us anything, at te exit of the parking lot (1 mile away from the closest entrance to the infiorate) there is a sign that apparently forbid to enter with the stroller... I decide to go anyway to investigate te reasons of this, turns out that 'FOR SAFETY REASONS' the mayor of the town on the 17th of June (with instance N°39 of 17th June 2022) did forbid to strollers to enter... so first you sell a ticket for the parking lot then advise (because I could have bought the ticket at the parking entrance and nobody would have told me about it). At the same time disabled person are allowed to enter in a wheelchair cause of course, if they forbid to disable to enter would have been discriminatory. So a stroller is a safety concern while a wheelchair is not... You know what, the guy of the security told me he hope to see me again, which i replied 'I hope not' and I also hope that the mayor of Spello spend all that 10€ in buying medicines.

The village of Spello is worth a visit at anytime. If you time your visit for the flower festival in June it is even more magical. Over night people work creating the most magnificent pictures out of dried flower petals. They spend the year drying boxes of petals in all colours to make huge arrangements on the streets of the town. However a visit to Spello is a must at any time if in Umbria. It is a great village to base yourself to explore the area. Spello is an ancient walled town that tumbles down the hills. There are a number of excellent restaurants so you can walk to dinner, no driving or parking worries. I cant wait to go back.

Once a year Spello hosts the largest flower-art festival in all of Europe. Teams for all over come to show off their skills in creating amazing works of art using only the petals of flowers. Teams arrive on Saturday and begin cutting the flowers and laying out their designs on the pavement. It's an all-night effort with amazing results on the following day. Teams must have their work completed by mid-morning on Sunday. As a visitor, I would recommend getting up early before the crowds arrive and touring the village to view the several dozen works of art. Scaffolding and canopies may still be up in the early hours, but they are to be taken down in time for the celebration of Corpus Domine, and the religous procession in the early afternoon. Be aware the village will be packed with people in the afternoon. So plan on being there well before noon. By Sunday evening these murals have been pretty much ruined by the wind, the procession, and the crowds. However the beauty of this amazing village endures through the summer in the over 100 homes that have potted flowers and plants decorating the narrow lanes. Spello is a village of flowers.

My husband and I were lucky enough to be in the Spello area in 1998 at the time of the Infiorate di Spello so we were able to witness both the preparation and the procession the next morning. That visit to the festival was not planned but for the past 18 years we have been determined to return to Spello for the Infiorate. This year was the year. After having a wonderful outdoor dinner with six of our friends at Enoteca Properzio on the evening before the procession we wandered around the town to witness the preparations. For those readers not familiar with the Infiorate di Spello it is a very special local Umbrian festival celebrating Corpus Christi. It appears as if everyone in the town ( both young and old) is involved in the preparation for the celebration. On the Saturday evening teams of people get together to create beautiful and original mosaics out of flower petals. The teams work throughout the night and when these flower mosaics are completed they are laid out like carpets down the narrow main streets and throughout the principal piazzas of the town. On Sunday morning the Bishop carries the Blessed Sacrament in procession along these beautiful floral carpets. One difference between our visit in 1998 and our visit this year was the size of the crowds. The Infiorate di Spello has become an extremely popular event and an early arrival, both in the evening to watch the preparations and in the morning to see the completed creations, is a must. This is a local Italian festival that should be on the bucket list of everyone that loves history, tradition and beauty.

Spello, Italy is a beautiful mid evil town in the Umbria area. It is a wonderful hillside village with homes that are connected side by side with quaint shops and wonderful restaurant's. A definite place to see off the beaten path and so worth it. It is a little off the beaten path and a definite to go to to enjoy the history and ancient village as it would be thousands of years ago. Be prepared to walk up steep hilly narrow cobblestone streets and enjoy the quaint gardens. Very scenic.

A festival that shouldn't be missed. Everyone in the town get involved and you can help too. They start around 8pm on the Saturday evening, work through the night to produce the most fantastic flower carpets and pictures. Exquisite!
