Of course this trip occurred the day after our trip to Volunteer Point so that is part of the reason. Bertha’s Beach is a bit closer to Stanley and the off road experience is only about 30 minutes.

Plenty of Gentoo colonies here and a few Magellanic penguins. We arrived and had the beach all to ourselves which was great - the Gentoo’s were having lots of fun running in and out of the water. There are endless beaches for hiking if you have a few hours. Had we not been at Volunteer Point the day before the rating would have been a notch higher...

Road we traveled to get here was not tarmac. It must have been what we had, not the road, that we were not feeling well when we got here. We left quickly as we did not want to pollute the beach for magnificent creatures.

We arranged for a tour through Patrick Watts and our guide drove us to this spot to see some penguins. We saw gentoos and a couple of rockhoppers. It was the highlight of the trip. Be warned, though: if you get carsick, this is not the trip for you. It was about 40 minutes of off-road driving through a field one way. But once we arrived it was fantastic.

Taking a local guide, at half the price off the boat. The locals act as a park Rangers to access the beach. Look, don't touch, the birds always are right, this is their home.

Beautiful beach that could quite possibly be in the Caribbean, sand is white and thecsea is a tropical view. Very lucky to go when the sea was calm and was, sky cloudless. Gentoo penguins were coming home, arriving in dribs and drabs from the sea, amazing to see in their own little habitat.

It was amazing to be there. Lots of Birds, Lambs and Penguins. The tour guide was a chilean , who has lived in the falklands for the last 6 years, Fernando Cordero. After we went into a small farm to see shearing. The road to Berthas's beach is really good.

We arranged a trip to Bertha's Beach and Gypsy Cove through Patrick Watts. He was waiting as promised at the dock and as soon as the other couple who shared our driver came off the ship, we were on our way. Our driver was Dave, a former Royal Marine from Liverpool who was among the 40 or so defenders of the Falklands when the Argentines invaded in 1982. He had lots of great information about the 76-day war. It was about 45 minutes on asphalt and gravel roads out to Bertha's Beach, where we saw hundreds of Gentoo penguins up close, walking among them on the beach and the adjacent grassland. There were no roped-off areas or other restrictions; we were out among the birds. Then we went to Gypsy Cove, where two large groups of Magellan penguins were down on the beach below a viewing area; we could not go down there because of possible mines left over from the war. We also got a tour of battle sites, monuments and points of interest around Stanley. Cost was $130 per person. We found this tour preferable to Volunteer Point, which involves two-plus hours each way, much of it off-road over rough terrain (although you do see the larger king penguins at Volunteer, and if that is a must for you, you should do that). But we were very, very happy with our experience and can recommend Patrick highly. He said he does not contract with the cruise lines at all because he wants to give people a good experience at a more reasonable price, and he said he hires only experienced drivers. We saw first-hand evidence of this when a 10-passenger van got stuck in the sand approaching Bertha's Beach, with clients on an official Holland America tour, We spoke to some of them back on the ship; they were not pleased at the distance they had to walk from the spot they got stuck. The van eventually got winched out by an independent jeep driver (unsure if it was one of Patrick's or maybe Estancia Tours), but the van did not proceed to the beach to get the passengers. It stayed where it was and the passengers had to walk all the way back. Patrick struck us as a tour operator with integrity and we are pleased to recommend his company.

We booked independently with Penguin Travel as the cruise operator tours were full and very expensive in comparison. We originally booked the trip to Volunteer Point however on the day we were late getting off the ship and sadly missed the trip. On arrival at the pier we found a rep who knew about us and called up her Manager who arrived and explained that due to the delay the trip had left but they offered an alternative excursion to Berthas Beach, disaster averted.

Our guide was Jass a lovely lady from Canada who has lived on the islands for a few years, she was very friendly and knowledgeable about the Falklands and the Penguins.

The Gentoos at BB are great fun to observe, you can literally sit and watch them for hours. Whilst at BB we also seen Dolphins and seals. This is a beautiful place to visit, unspoilt in many ways.

On leaving BB we had time to visit the totem and the Lady Elizabeth shipwreck as well as time in Stanley to visit the War Memorial.

Jass and the team at Penguin Travel really went out of their way to ensure our day wasn't spoilt and we seen penguins

Thank you for a memorable day

We wanted to visit Volunteer Point but it wasn't recommended due to our short stay off of a cruise ship. Although we only saw a pair of King penguins from afar at Gypsy Cove; we had a great tour! Patrick assigned us to Owen; a great local guy that knows the history of the Falklands because he grew up there & has a wicked sense of humour. We drove in his personal 4x4 with another couple from our cruise. Owen pointed out lots of interesting things to us along the way. It was a scenic drive to Bertha's Beach where we saw hundreds of Gentoo penguins up close. The beach itself was beautiful & we appreciated the coffee & cookies. Be sure to dress warm with a hat, mitts & waterproof jacket; the weather is ever changing there! After an hour, we drove through town & onward to Gypsy Cove where we saw a pair of King penguins from afar & a pod of Commerson's dolphins from afar! We were never rushed & Owen took the time to learn about our interests & tailer the tour accordingly. We met as strangers & left as friends after a few short hours; thanks Owen!

We booked the excursion a little late so many of the tours were already booked including many of the cruise ship's tours. We finally located this tour to Bertha's Beach with Penguin Travel and totally enjoyed it. After a ride out to the beach, we were allowed to walk around and take lots of pictures of the penguins - so much fun. We also had a tour around the town. Since the shops is right by the tender site boarding, we did some shopping before returning to the ship. Great time!
