The path follows the steps up to the church. Most of the way up there is a left fork which, if you're feeling fit you can take to the higher Santa Lucia. Up at San Matteo you get marvellous views over the town & beyond. The church is beautifully clean on the outside but all boarded up. A real shame.

the path and stirs are difficult to find and to climb but the view is beautiful. Unfortunately the church is closed and abandoned, run down and dirty, broken glasses and no description or history. what a shame ! and the municipality, where are they? a tresaure not well kept.

From far away you think wow, magnificent. One you are there you get disappointed. A nice building with literally nothing inside. But!!! From up there you get a magnificent view. It is worth the climb.

We would have liked to visit this church and we tried really hard but all the paths we could find vaguely in its direction were blocked off (afternoon of Ferragosto, maybe the wrong day to try). As in town nearly everything was shut maybe even if we managed to get there we would not have had much joy. However, from... More

for us ,an elderly couple, it was quite an effort to climb up to visit San Matteo but certainly worth it. The view from the top is absolutly splendid and the panorama impressive. A wonderful spot.

The steep road from Palazzo Beneventano, which soon becomes a path with many steps, makes an attractive if tiring walk, but at the top it is disappointing not to get a sight of the church. Surely at least a small aperture could have been left in the wooden barricade so that at least the façade would be visible.

It's the most representative monument in Scicli, dominating the valley with the town. A wonderful landscape ranging as far as the sea can be admired from the church of San Matteo.
