The Hluboká Castle is conveniently located 10 km from České Budějovice, thus making it a great place for one day trips.
It is apparent the village of Hluboká nad Vltavou is a prospering place so summer 2020 has seen it full of reconstruction works. Also, be aware this place is very popular so you may expect crowds.
You can either walk from the central parking place or take a train up to the castle. I suggest walking, you can enjoy the picturesque streets better. The walk is 15 minutes tops. However, families with children will appreciate the opportunity not to go on foot.
When you have made it to the top you can have a guided tour of the inside of the castle and enjoy the beautiful park and admire the views of the castle at your own pace. Suitable for all ages.
When in South Bohemia, do give this castle a go. You do not have to be a history or architecture enthusiast to enjoy this place.

We were surprised to see a castle in such great condition, the grounds and garden are beautiful. You must take a paid tour to view the castle, we would have preferred to view on our own, but it's not expensive and still worthwhile to see - you just have to plan your visit accordingly to match with a tour in your preferred language, so it eliminates just turning up when you're passing through the area as an option. Which is what we did. We didn't want to wait 40 minutes for a tour in English so took a Czech tour and just viewed the castle. We found the story of the family very interesting and even did a bit more research on our own later in the evening, it's a fascinating, and tragic story that continues into the 21st century.

I stopped to see this castle on my way from Cesky Krumlov to Karlovy Vary (although it would be on way to Prague also). I suggest that if you are navigating the Czech countryside that you do not miss this historic and architecturally beautiful castle.
It is worth the trip even if you only see the outside, but there is so much more inside. The grounds are meticulously kept and beautiful. The building is also well kept and one of the most beautiful castles I've ever seen - a storybook castle. The Art Deco aspects add interest to its features.
I took the English tour. I believe it took about 50 minutes. Tourists cannot take pictures in the castle. It is fully furnished and has been renovated since it was built by the family that owned the castle till they fled from the Nazi's.
The wood carved fire place is unbelievable. It is so intricate. There are too many features to remark on - but the rooms and decorations are ornate and indicate the wealth of the family at this time. The family was the Schwarzenbergs that obtained the castle in 1661, until 1939 when they fled.
I highly recommend this as a good place to stop and perhaps take the tour and have lunch on the grounds.

Finally got to visit this castle, which was lastly owned by the Schwarzenberg family until the year 1947 when it was confiscated by the state together with Český Krumlov, to get a bit more about the history. A few days before we did visit Hluboká we also visited Český Krumlov. Both places are definitely worth visiting, although Hluboká is much nicer as it was also the preferred place to stay and, therefore, very nicely designed and equipped. Personally, I loved the library the most, I could spend hours reading there. Everywhere in the castle we saw beautiful furniture made of wood. The guide managed the group well, although some people were still taking pictures ileven if it was forbidden.

Do you think you have seen this castle somewhere before? It must have been in one of the films such as the fantasy film Underworld or the famous Czech classic The Proud Princess (Pyšná Princezná).
Thanks to its location near České Budějovice and Český Krumlov, Hluboká nad Vltavou is a great place for a day trip. If you are on vacation in South Bohemia, you should not miss this fairytale castle.
I visited it during the winter season and I was not disappointed. The castle offers really informative tour even in winter. You can also visit the souvenir shop. The staff and guides are very friendly and will certainly be happy to help you if needed.
There were not many tourists here at this time of the year, but you should be prepared that there are a lot of them in the main season.
And when you are done with your tour, you can spend a lot of time in the castle gardens, visit the neighboring gallery, nearby port or even the ZOO in the city.

This castle is GORGEOUS! The exterior and grounds alone are worth the drive out of Prague. The tour was only in Czech when we were there but we still did it. They had booklets in different languages- including English- giving you information about each room. It was a great visit.

Lovely building inside and out. We did the apartment tour in the winter, which I believe is the only tour at this time of year. Lasted approx 50 minutes. Plenty of information from the guide and if you do not understand Czech then they offer foreign language tours or use a guide book they provide in several languages.
The gardens were disappointing although maybe in the spring its more floral.

Magical place worth a visit. A bit of a steep walk from the parking lot but definitely worth it. The views are stunning. We climbed the 245 steps to the top to maximize on the view. Wear comfortable shoes and If you have small kids I would recommend bringing a stroller.

They renovated the castle in the 20th century so it would look like a castle form Great Britain.
This it is a picturesque and beautiful castle, and it was fun taking pictures around it.
It is still not open for tourists since it is March, I think the open in April.
There is a bit of a walk uphill to reach the castle, so prepare yourself for that.

Its a beautiful building, very well maintained, so bad visitors concept doesnt match 21st century at all. Each section of the castle is a different guided tour, some aren’t even run on every day, with different ticket and only with a tour guide. This is very off-putting as makes impossible to plan ahead - very rate that someone would like to spend an entire day here. A self-paced tour with an audio guide would result in probably much more visitors and higher satisfaction

Hi there, is it interesting enough to only taking an 'outside ' tour and the climb to the top of the tower? We like to visite the castle and it's park but we are visiting with a 8 year old and a dog. Thank you for answering.

Das Schloss mit seine Park braucht 2-3 Stunden, in wenige Minuten ist erreichbar das schöne Stadt Ceské Budejovice, oder in etwas 35 Kilometern das weltrenomierte Stadt Cesky Krumlov.

When visiting Hluboka castle, did you buy admission to the castle ahead of time or was it no problem to buy them day-of? Also, how often do the tours take place? (English speaking). We are travelling in August and aren't sure how busy it can get and whether it's necessary/worth it to purchase online ahead of time.
Thank you

Hi, you can buy it at the place the day-of. I am not sure about english tours but it depends on day. I can reccommend visit the official website zamek-hluboka.eu/en.

Здравствуйте, собираюсь в Прагу в конце октября - начале ноября всего на 6 дней. Имеет ли смысл, на ваш взгляд, ехать в этот замок? Заранее спасибо)
Written September 7, 2017
Доброго времени суток! Поехать стоит.На мой вкус, Глубока- самый красивый из чешских замков ( а я видела много замков). Хорошо бы совместить поездку с осмотром другого замка, Орлик, например, или Крумлов.
