Imposing castle in lovely countryside

Top of a hill in a nice village. A good walk up to the castle which is worth a look around. The views from the castle back down to the village are worth the walk in itself.

It was closed when we went. We knew that in advance but it didn't prevent us having a wonderful day adventure from Prague, catching the train out to Karlstejn. A pleasant ride on the rails followed by a walk from the station up to the castle was fun and enjoyed by the whole family - kids aged 6 and 13.... More

We biked there with a company called Praha Bike but you can also take the train to the town where the castle is It is a beautiful medieval castle with a winding road leading up the hill to the castle, you can either walk or take a horse and buggy ride to the top then walk down past charming cafes... Beautiful views of the valley from the top of the castle. The locals are super friendly with some lovely places to eat and drink. I totally... More

This castle is truly a must see! Did not get a chance to go inside as we arrived too late but just walking up those cobblestone streets to the castle was an adventure in itself. Parking was a little crazy and it took us a while to find something. Make sure you take a moment to try a little cafe/bakery... More

Really impressive Central Europe Medieval Castle. Can't understand though why non-Czechs have to pay (almost) double (330CZK instead of the usual 180), why the info center by the main road wasn't manned, why the castle's main attraction closed end of March, why no free leaflets available except in Czech a.s.o.

Whilst one can book organised coach tours, it was far more enjoyable and just as easy to visit by train – and a fraction of the price. With a half-hourly 45 minute train journey schedule in modern trains, this means a leisurely trip from Prague’s main railway station (check if Prague Smichov station is closer to your hotel) all for...
