Stunningly beautiful place . BUT if you get mountain sickness YOU WILL DIE up there .
On August 8th we drove to Papallacta and got there late evening . Once I got there my BP was noted to be 180/105 with mild shortness of breath. I had already arranged for oxygen with my travel agency but the doctor who evaluated me refused to give me oxygen. She treated my BP and left. Over the next 4-5 hrs symptoms became worse. Multiple requests were made to Dr.Montes de Oca to revaluate and start oxygen treatment for hypoxia of less than 90% oxygen. She proceeded to tell me that my oxygen level was good and "it is not good to provide oxygen if it is not really necessary" I repeatedly told her that I am only able to keep the oxygen level in my body around close to 89-90 by sitting straight up and taking very deep breaths which was making me light headed . She said she is worried about "oxygen toxicity" between 2-3 am my heart rate began to drop with severe shortness of breath and headache if I lay down. When she finally made it to my room with her oxygen tank my BP was 180/105 HR 40-41 . It is a miracle I did not have cardiac arrest and die up in that mountain . If they advertise that they have a doctor in the premises to treat altitude sickness , it is their responsibility to make sure they hire trained , experienced ,competent physician who is able to treat as well as prevent catastrophes . The Papallacta organization and Dr.Montes de Oca failed

This was the last of our visits while in Ecuador and we are so glad we waited for this relaxing day high in the Andes to soak our feet and decompress before heading back to the States. Go with the plan to relax and enjoy. We heard from locals that weekends are busy, but our Thursday was low-key. Note: in addition to secure lockers, they offer baskets to hold your things around the pools, which we walked right past. The pools are clean, some private, most open, many different water levels and temps, including some chilled pools fresh off the rushing river that runs through the area. Relax, lay back and just enjoy the mountain jungle that surrounds you.

All around winner - the ride from Quito through the Andes and down into the valley was amazing. The spa also was amazing - in a natural setting surrounded by mountains. Having the choice of pools was great! We had an amazing massage and returned the the pools. The gardens, beautiful - lunch at the restaurant, very, very good,

Visiting in mid-May we had a cloudy overcast day with temperatures in the 70's. Our primary interest was in hiking along the river with our guide to get a sense of the flora in the region. The path was about 2 miles R/T with somewhat muddy conditions but not too demanding. Lovely small orchids along the way and learning about this particular bioregion. Lunch at the restaurant was delicious with traditional Ecuadorean choices. We actually did not use the thermal springs that day---just not in the mood to get dressed, undressed, dressed...etc. but they all looked lovely on the private/vip section and I could definitely think about this for the next trip.

Our family spent about 4 hours at the Termas de Papallacta (Papallacta hot springs) prior to a late-night flight home, and easily could have spent more time there. We arrived early afternoon and started with a late lunch at the Pumamaki restaurant. The menu was limited but the food--including the local specialty, trout--was very good. Two lockers were plenty large for our boots, jackets, and backpacks. Towel rental was $1 with a $5 deposit. In addition to a variety of large and small pools of warm and hot water (including a shallower, more tepid pool that the kids loved), there were also a few small plunge pools of very cold water from the nearby river. The mountain setting is gorgeous and the grounds were beautifully landscaped. We loved watching hummingbirds as we relaxed in the waters. If we visit Ecuador again, we would go back to the Termas, and perhaps spend some time hiking, try the spa area (we stayed in the "public" area on this visit), and stay the night in a cabin. Don't forget sunscreen--Papallacta is more than 10,000 feet in elevation.

It’s super cheap to get into the springs in either the general admission or the vip section. Hire a driver and go. This tour on trip advisor is very overpriced.

A great way to spend a day! We hired a driver out of Quito for the beautiful ride up to the hot springs. The spa is clean and in a lovely setting. We enjoyed the pools and my friend had a massage while I had a’ chocolate wrap’. We were both happy. Afterwards we had a pleasant lunch in the restaurant before returning to Quito.I would recommend the spa (very affordable and seniors get half price) to anyone.

Such a beautiful place less than an hour from the Quito Airport. Great last stop for a day visit before an overnight flight home! Pay extra for the spa experience! Worth it!

Our group of friends comes here often from Quito after working hours during the week to enjoy this nice place. The opening hours are until 22h30. Nevertheless already at 20h00 the staff in the last months is starting to emptying several pools, making the guests gather in the few pools still with water, and making it impossible to respect social distancing. On top of that, the last couple of times the cold water pool on the upper part of the facility is always empty, making it impossible to follow the hot and cold therapy which is essential for thermal springs. Im sure that the Management is not aware of this. It seems that the staff is trying to do their cleaning duty during opening hours, making it impossible for the guest to have the full services which is offered. Specially emptying the only cold water tub makes no sense. Its very small and fast to clean and fill up again, but essential for the whole thermal baths experience.

We will be staying one night at termas de Papallacta. Are all the thermal pools included in the stay or to be paid for separately? Is the spa package something different?

Just wondering how long people would recommend to stay here? I have about a week in between tours in Quito and thought this would be nice a relaxing to stay for about 4 nights.

We were here only for 2-3 hours after a short hike. For us, 4 nights will be too long unless you like to do lots of hiking

If my family stays at Termas de Papallacta for 2 nights, what other activities are there to do? Also, if we want to get to the town for dinner outside of the hotel, what do you recommend?
Termas Papallacta
Ecuador2 contributions
Thanks for your question, we offer extra activities like: SPA treatments at our Thermal Club, walking trips* and horseback riding* (*it has to be booked directly at Papallacta and depend on the weather). 2 nights is the perfect time to get relax, enjoy the nature and discover the benefits of the thermal water.
Papallacta is not a touristic town that is why we suggest you to get your dinner at our restaurant.
