Warning, before you attempt this trail go to Main Street Restaurant & Bakery and buy yourself a reward treat...I suggest the apple pie. Franey trail is a true hike and you will be sweating and grunting your way up a mountain. However, you will be...More

This hike served some of the most amazing views that I have ever seen! The hike was not too difficult in my opinion, but the rest of my family did find it a bit difficult. We often hike, what made this hike more strenuous was...More

We started the Franey Trail 7.4 km (4.6 mile) loop at 9:44 a.m. We were glad to have our trekking poles with us on this hike. It definitely lives up to its Difficult rating because of the steady uphill climb, steep sections, and rocky, root...More

After a bit of confusion at the start (2 trailheads at the same place, NOT as clearly marked) we finally got onto Franey Trail. Straight uphill via stone stairs; very pleasant, lovely views. Way down was on an access road and easier going. LONG

Love the view from this mountain. We hiked the steepest route to the top, many steps but not bad. Saw two hawks on the trail.

This trail is steep but only relative to the other nearby trails and is definitely doable by people in relatively good shape - no athletic prowess needed. The view at the top is spectacular so give yourself some time at the top to just "be."...More

This was definitely the most challenging hike we did on our trip, but the lookouts at the top made it totally worthwhile!! Be sure to see both views (from the rock where the red chair is, and down to the right overlooking the valley). VERY...More

My friend and I did 3 hikes in this area, and this one was our favorite! It took just under 3 hours to complete (accounting for 30 minute stop at the top). It's on the upper end of 'moderate difficulty', but if you're of an...More

I hiked Mt. Franey as part of a package hiking trip, and I have to say it was one of my favourite hikes in Cape Breton. It's a bit steep in spots, but it's not a long hike and the view is worth it. People...More

Out of 5 big hikes we did on the Cabot Trail, this one was my least favorite. It was the most difficult out of all the hikes we did and had the least amount of views. You will walk uphill on a steep incline for...More

hi, we are travelling to cape breton this july 2016 i understand the franey trail has two routes?.. could you expand on this please? how long does it take?? how difficult? we are quite inexperienced hikers but fairly fit in our late 40's.... would appreciate any input you might have. i understand that there are 2 summits? the red chair and one after that, what is the time difference between them please ---------- Another question would be Franey Mount Hike or Cape Smokey???? if you have been on both... we are not sure if we should hike franey mountain or cape smokey we only have time for 1 unfortunately... do you have any suggestions? which view at the top is most spectacular? thankyou soo much sharon

HI, Franey is very steep, not a long hike up maybe an hour or less with great views at the top. I dont recall 2 trails to take up, we hiked up the main trail and then took a very rocky riverbed type trail down because it was... More
