This castle is located on the very scenic road drive from Volre to Saranda. Distance between the two is around 140 km, but it takes more than 3 hrs driving without stopping and entire day with stops, among which is this castle. The Ali Pasha Tepelena castle (its full name) was built at the early 1800's for the local Ottoman governor of the area, by a famous French military engineer (supposedly killed after completion). The peninsula was originally an island, but it was connected with mainland during construction. The castle is a massive fortification, very nice to explore and with magnificent views from the top terrace (a wedding occurred during our visit). Entry fee only 100 Lek, less than a Euro. After exploring, don't forget to dip for a swim in the magnificent Palermo beach bay adjacent to the castle. Great break on our drive - historical and relaxing.…

my friends and i had a 3 hour drive from south to north and decided to stopover the castle for a break. no regrets! it took us about 30mins to cover the ground and we absolutely loved hanging at the roof of the castle as the view was amazing. definitely one of the nicer castles we visited in albania!…

The castle is very well preserved and offers excellent views from the upper level. On a hot day you can cool off at the beach beside the access path to the castle. The access path to the castle is an uphill uneven walk and might be a challenge for people with mobility issues.

The castle has no furnishings, great views though, cheap to enter 100 Lek/per person. We parked our camper across the road from the little port near the restaurant, no charge. Would recommend visiting.

Nice place, you can feel the history when you browse this fortress. On walls you can see painted paintings. The fortress is little bit maze. From the walls you can see the Porto Palermo inlet. Close the fortress is beach and by the route is very good restauration. We recommended order sea food.…
