We visited this place a week back. Since it was winter the weather was just fine. I may not recommend during summer as temperatures reach 40+ degrees. We reached early morning by 8:00 a.m The park opens by 7:30 a.m. This park is located 10Kms off the Bhavnagar -Ahmedabad highway. A single road leads you to the park. There is a reception centre at the entrance where one has to buy the tickets. It is Rs.450/- for a car + Rs.200 for camera + some Rs.30/- per head in the car. You compulsorily have to hire a guide for Rs.100/- without which you are not permitted in the park. Both diesel and petrol cars are permitted in the park. Just close to the reception centre is the adjoining lodging facility which looks decent. Though we did not stay there. You are supposed to drive your car along the track in the park which is a non tar dusty road. All along on both sides are beautiful landscapes of the grasslands like the famous savannah. You will sight herds of Blackbucks, Deer, Nilgai, and other four legged wonders grazing in the fields. Be careful to switch off your engine as you near them or they simply run away from the noise of the engine. Those photography enthusiast will really enjoy the clicking these wonderful animals. Apart from the when you look towards the trees you may spot various species of birds from eagles, kites, parrots, blue tail, etc. The whole ride in the park may take you about 2 hours. There is also a museum to see which we opted out because of less time. Its a calm and quite place away from the hustle bustle and still it can be considered virgin, since its not thronged by many people and commercialised. All in all a natural habitat which is a must visit if you are in this region.

Land of blackbucks
The most majestic and swift antelope is found here in plenty. I told my cousin to keep an eye for any animal when we were approaching this place in the evening, and then we spotted one black beauty...seconds later another and then another and then the grounds and the grasslands simply flushed with bluebulls and blackbucks.
This was the first time that in my several jungle rides till date I spotted mammal predators ... Hyena Cubs and two wolves, the Cubs were clicked nicely...the wolves ran away. It being March most migratory birds had flown away however I did see a few harriers here and there or flying. Several fly down from, outside the park as the sun sets.
If you truly love nature stay at the forest lodge, booking which is a pain.however you can't stay anymore close to nature than this. The harriers flying over you the blackbuck chasing females in front of you
And what home food....by cook Gopal bhai, Hazi Khan and his wife Zarina. The Hindu Muslim bonding also is touching.
The guide accompanying us, Ayub is very keen photographer himself.
We chose weekdays hence our luck at sightings was good.

Velavadar National Park is a small, 34 square-kilometer untravelled park was beyond wonderful. Beautiful grasslands of red and gold and green teaming with life. The majestic Nilgai, in large herds; the elegant blackbuck, keen to show off their graceful leaps; crazy numbers of harriers – the largest nesting ground of harriers – nicely landing, hunting and flying for us; then there were marshy wetlands filled with birds of all sort, including beautiful eagles, pelicans, ducks... A paradise for photography, especially for birds, but also for capturing the elegance of the blackbuck.
Our cameras seemed never to stop, as we kept trying to capture the perfect flight photo of the pallid, marsh and montague harriers. Not to mention the mid-leap beauty of the blackbuck antelope. The mature males have incredible spiraling horns, that can reach 65cm. Wonderful stop on our trip.
You take your own car into the park, and stick to a set route/road within it. The fee is for the full day, so if you want to take two drives, time it accordingly, otherwise you’re paying double the amount for two drives that you would if you did a morning and afternoon drive the same day.
As well, there doesn’t seem to be any map available for visitors. My Google Maps phone app helped us to a certain degree. On our second drive, we asked a local boy/quasi naturalist-guide to join us. It was worth it, but his English was not strong so you need to have an Indian with you, or your driver needs to be able to translate. Still, for 100INR it is worth it for him simply to point you in the direction of heavily populated areas.
There’s not much here for accommodation and not much for information available for planning to go to this park. Bhavnagar is the nearest big town, and is a couple of hours away. There is the Gujurat tourism guest house, which is a good deal for Indians, but overpriced for foreigners. If you stay here, bring your own food if you can – especially if you’re a foreigner since the same meal costs you 7x the cost of what an Indian national pays and is not nearly worth what you get.
There’s the upscale Blackbuck Lodge that we popped in to see. It looks very beautiful and sumptuous, but is proportionately priced. We also passed a roadside hotel on the main road to the park entrance road -- Jeer Hotel -- but didn’t check it out and have not been able to find any reference online for it.
If you’re a wildlife, and especially bird, lover, this park is definitely worth a visit. If you are, then try to do a morning and an evening drive.

If you are passionate about Blackbucks and they are a must see on your list, visit. This was a 6 hour out of the way trip for us. We stayed one night at the Blackbuck Lodge (amazing, made it worth the extra drive time). But all in all this was not a great park to visit. It was small, and we basically drove down a road that was beside the highway. We did see a lot of Blackbuks though and were even treated to a brief sighting of the very rare Jungle Cat.
The guides that join you, although very nice, spoke no english and we got the impression that our tour guide who accompanied us, had little to no knowledge of the animals or the park.
On our way out there were 2 stray dogs running in the field and we passed 2 park rangers with rifles. When asked what they were doing our guide told us that they were going to shoot the dogs because they entered the national park. Although I do understand they are a danger to the Blackbuck, this is a wild park, not a zoo.
All in all we enjoyed the resort more than the game drive and could have skipped the drive completely to enjoy the resort amenities more.

I went to Velavadar blackbuck national park with minimum expectations and a hope to see atleast a few blackbucks, since I was travelling all the way from Mumbai. But to my pleasure and surprise, the park threw up such treasures that this trip will remain amongst my favourite.
Firstly the blackbucks are in plenty but its advisable to go at the correct time to see them. We were there early morning and hence had good sighting of the blackbucks, nilghais, wild boars and many birds. You can take your own vehicle. A govt guide accompanies each vehicle. Our guide was knowledgeable and pointed out the various animals and birds with patience and interest. We had hired an open jeep from the nearby blackbuck lodge and felt it was worth every rupee. The round of the park took nearly two hours. Since we travelled in Feb, the grass was golden. It is to be noted that this is not a jungle but more of a grassland/wetland..
We requested to see the govt rooms and the dorm looked neat and tidy. If in a group, it could be a good place to stay. We stayed at Bhavnagar and drove down very early in the morning for one hour to reach the park by 7.00 am.
The only con is that the common toilets at the park were not clean. Canteen facility is available only to the guests who stay there. Hence either food/water should be carried along or one can have it in many of the dhabas lining the bhavnagar highway.
Definitely worth a visit if you are a nature lover.

To see Blackbuck herds this Park is a must! Vegetation is cut in rotation to encourage maximum density of grazing and predators can with care be found by guides. Wolf, striped hyena and jungle cat on the prowl and Nilgai wandering on the plains amongst the black buck herds. A truly awe inspiring and unforgettable sight!

Dinosaur park showing various kinds in dummies.
Multiple animals and birds including the national bird peacock can be seen in full bloom. Enjoyable experience, need almost half day to complete but few hours are a minimum.

It's on the way from Ahmedabad or Baroda To Bhavnagar. 40 km away from Bhavnagar. It's beautiful place and to stay here in winter would be memorable. I would recommend to stay 1 night here for the beauty of this Park. Blackbuck and Deer are so much but night view of stars and sky is added advantage.

I have visited this sanctuary last week. Government should put more efforts to develop and attract tourist.
Car entry Rs.400/- Rs.50/- per person n guide charges are Rs.100/-
Above charges are extremely high compared to what you see. More professional approach is required. Sanctuary can be seen in 45 minutes. Guide available can not speak in English or Hindi properly.

with the special permission (from the forest department) you can go as early as 4 in the mornings (normally for the professional biologist, bird experts or wild-life photographers.)
for normal visitors, its 6am till 6pm.
and for a group you can also stay over night. (my brother-in-law did that with his students)
