Butterfly Man of India- Peter Smetacek
Jun. 2019 • Family
cuddled in a serene corner of this lake city Peter Smetacek's property is a must visit for naturalists. Many woderful trivias were explained beautifully to my daughters, learnt how to study a butterfly, a warm and refreshing welcome with juicy watermelons, a totally earthy feel away from the maddening world, awesome collection of worldwide moths and butterflies preserved over two generations.... and of course his lovely pets the two watchdogs.

Experience
May 2019 • Couples
Don't expect to see a lot. It's just a room full of butterflies. But an awesome collection, kids will love..
I suppose the guy, an englishman surely, put incredible effort collecting and documenting it.
He wasn't around when we went there, but two indian girls took care of us in typical pahadi friendly manners.
But if he were there may be would have understood it better
Even got tea made.
Go if u have time, and not in hurry .

Come for butterflies, Stay for the food
Feb. 2018 • Friends
Stayed here with a few classmates for two weeks during our study abroad program and completely loved every minute of it. If you are passing by Bhimtal, you must see the Butterfly cafe, try Shiela-ji's food, and have a chat with Peter-ji! Shiela-ji makes the best home-cooked food in Bhimtal, and Peter-ji can talk about anything and everything. I would definitely visit again!!

A way of life
Oct. 2018 • Friends
This place reinforces how being one with nature is a way of life. The amazing collection of butterflies, moths and myriad other creatures take your breath away, and Peter is always gracious enough to share his vast knowledge on the subject. Every nook and cranny of the house, every piece of antique furniture has a story. You wake up to the chirping of birds and take in the myriad hues of nature. Food is definitely a highlight. Local seasonal - mostly organic food, along with home made peanut butter, jams and pickles served with utmost love and care only add to the list of pleasures one experiences here. And if one observes closely enough, there is so much to learn on every aspect of coexistence with nature without necessarily being the exploitative consumerist we have all become.

More than a cafe

The food was good for sure but what is great is the rich experience of knowing about butterflies, seeing some amazing ones and the conversations with the owner are stimulating, the sound of the jungle, the scent of pine.... it’s a special experience!!

A must visit if you are in Bhimtal
Nov. 2018 • Family
I did a google for the places to visit in Bhimtal and it was one of the topmost things here to do. And certainly, it is.

It's very rare to find an attraction like this. The place is a little uphill and the roads are narrow but after the visit, yoy wouldn't regret the effort made.

The owner Mr. Peter explains you well about different butterflies, moths and a few other insects that he has preserved.

If you are a nature lover, you would love this place for sure.

butterflies - a world of mimicry
Oct. 2018 • Couples
good and large variety of collections of moths and butterflies. I was just an enthusiast; but his informative and interesting talks were very simple and no scientific terms used; this made the session more apt for novice like us. We come to know the butterfly world is not at all romantic and colorful. Colors are their survival trick. He has a large collections of Indian species and reference also. The species from other parts of the world are sent by his friends.

Location is little difficult to find, but locals know it well, it is 3 km up from the bhimtal lake and google map locates it perfectly. only on the way to the centre you will loose the GPS connection.

He has a homestay also, which I can not comment as not stayed there.
