We didn’t actually get as far as the glacier itself but we walked along the valley towards it. We were lucky it was a perfect day warm with clear blue sky but the mountains and the glacier were spectacular and majestic. It is a scary drive from Mestia up narrow mountain roads with sheer drops to the river but hold your nerve both the journey and the destination are worth it!

This glacier is melting. I prefer my glaciers to be either staying the same or getting larger. It's hard to find those these days. Also, since the glacier is melting, there is a nice stream coming from it, but the water is not quite as cold as I would like. I mean, the water is very cold, but I was hoping for instant frostbite. The rocks around are decent, but not smooth though made of various minerals so most Geo-Enthusiasts should find something to like. There are a few dogs to whom you should pay entrance in bread or preferably dried meats. The glacier is their domain. I was hoping also to see a RolliBock but none made themselves known from the cave. There were some rockfalls but nothing I would call a rock slide. Overall, I think 4* based on the size.

Shkhara Glacier can be seen from Ushguli, but it is often hidden by clouds. Mountains like Mount Shkhara (about 5000 m) show us how small Man is in Nature in the 21st century.
