En route from Castle Drogo to Lydford Gorge we happened upon this place just before midday. The pub opposite was fully booked so we ended up eating here too. We had a look round the carpenter's, blacksmith's and machinery workshops and then the garden and graveyard. We had sandwiches and drinks in the tearoom and enjoyed chatting to the lady... More

Have visited lots of National Trust properties, but this is certainly different and in my opinion the best of them all. Does not look very big from the outside, but when you go under the archway, it is wonderful. There is a very pretty garden with a summerhouse, once belonging to the Pearce family (of John Pearce, Widecombe Fair fame).... More

The experience starts when you drive between the two houses to get to the carpark. The whole place is just wonderful, with water flowing above your head, and open fires with men hitting white hot metal. It is a brillant way to introduce children to how live was not so long ago. There are explainations and demonostrations of most of... More

Nice place to visit for a few hours. A National Trust building set in a lovely village. The talk given by staff is worth listerning to. We got to see the forge as it would have been like in the past. Watched the water wheels power the macinery that would have been used to make metal tools. The site has... More

An amazing view back into time when the Forge was the focal point of most villages- to see and hear about the history and workings of a real forge was enchanting. The opportunity to walk in the steps of history and absorb the atmosphere was exhilarating .

The foundry has an interesting little museum giving the history of the family and the water wheels and mill stream very picturesque, however we were a little disappointed to find that the forge wasn't working and apparently the hammer mechanism is cracked and can't be used for the foreseeable future. Nice little tea room and lovely peaceful garden. We will... More

So lovely to see the Foundry in all of its original glory, and working too. Very informative talk. Lots to do for such a small site. Beautiful gardens. Take time to visit the Quaker Cemetary as well.

Put aside time to travel to this lovely attraction. Small, quaint and a working forge that is great to see. The waterwheel is fascinating and great also for children to learn some basics about 'power'. Food is pretty standard National Trust fayre, but very tasty alternatively within spitting distance are two village pubs (proper pubs that you can take a... More

We visited the Finch Foundry on a damp rainy day . The site is small but very interesting with a very informative talk by the staff on the history of the Foundry . We were disappointed that the large Foundry machinery was out of action due to a broken part awaiting repair on our visit , but would definatley make... More
