About
The old capital of Camiguin, with its cemetery, sunk under the sea. In the following years, the sunken land and the gravestones can still be seen. when the tide is low. But in 1948 until 1953, Mount Vulcan erupted again, sinking the whole area deeper, to around twenty feet. In 1982, a large cross was built on the solidified lava to mark the site that became the graves of the ancestors of the Camiguin people. It has now become the area know as the sunken cemetery.

Overall, everything is very dirty and it doesn't look like it's been looked after. The entire entrance is privately owned and there are lots of run-of-the-mill souvenirs. There are no places to sit for friends or relatives waiting. There used to be coffee, but unfortunately it isn't anymore. Swimming in the sea to the actual cemetery is only possible with a guide. Unfortunately, there are no changing facilities or showers. Just a bucket... But everything costs money...

Full of history and culture. It shows the true nature of Camigueños, friendly and hospitable. I suggest to find a bankero (boat man) who really know the place history and who really are good in taking pictures. Our boat man (Joey) is a professional scenery photographer. We did not try snorkling but according to him it is a must. For sure we will try next time.

The sunken cemetery has been an icon of Camiguin. Its like a passport stamp that will certify your trip to the island. An essential for photo souvenir of Camiguon trip. Its a nice place to visit as there are a lot of pristine coral reefs in the area. Souvenir items are also available for purchase near the area.

sunken cemetery is one of the attraction in camiguin island. it was submerge during the time the volcano in the island was so active. the place is beside the sea and you still can come closer to the area by boat. the surrounding is safe and a lot of foods is available.

If you are expecting to see an underwater graveyard, you won't. All the graves and tombs have been covered by coral decades ago. Mostly it is just an expensive tourist trap. If you want to swim you have to pay a very steep entrance fee and hire a guide. You will see lots of coral, small fish, a couple giant clams and a underwater head of Christ that may or may not be original. The under water cross is fake and the above water cross is strictly for tourists. Much better snorkeling is to be found at Blue Lagoon and the Giant clam sanctuary, both of which are cheaper, more worthwhile and less touristy.

Really? We just wanted to swim around and snorkel and you want us to pay 100p each? There are no amenities, no upkeep, what is the fee for? We got tired of hands out every where we went.

This is the first time I have seen an actual cemetery sunk in the sea. It is quite unique. For a fee, you can hire a boat to bring you to the big crucifix and also see the tombs underneath. One can also go snorkeling in the marine sanctuary just beyond the cemetery to see the active marine life below.
The best time to visit is early morning when the tide is high and it is nice to go snorkeling. Or if you just want to see the cemetery, visit during low tide when the top of some tombs could be visible above the water.

It's interesting to hear about this cemetery. the cross is way out in the water which marks the graves. Other than that there isn't much to see.

The sand was black and sparky, but really fine. It was beautiful. We did not get to snorkel since my friends didn't want to. It is a really nice place to see the sunset though and just chill.
