After a thirty minute ride up a long winding potmarked road, we finally arrived at the end of the road in what can only be described as a shanty town made up of a number of thatched shacks occupied by native Cambodians. Delighful people about to be disposessed of their land in a national park by a developer who sees some financial gain in the park.Being some hundreds of feet above sea level it is not quite so humid there so it was a relief from the always present humidity. The "camp" was interesting and we spent some money to help the families there. Overall though not worth the hours it takes from Phnom Penh to get there and back (About 5 hours) There are few views and what there was was covered in heat haze.

Beautiful to see the natural forests of Cambodia. Unfortunately the main attraction - the waterfalls - is nearly covered with platform cabins for people to come for a picnic. You can order local food and sit and enjoy the view of the water. Was disturbed to be offered the "forest animal" for lunch in a national park in a country that is suffering from such great problems with poaching.

We went for a short 2 day trip to Kirirom National Park. We visited Chombok waterfall (about 10km from Kirirom, nice 40 min trek uphill, entrance fee 3$/person as of Aug 15) and Kirirom National Park (entrance fee 5$\person).

We rented a car to get as to the ruins of king's residence as well as Kirirom waterfalls and some Wats along the way. It took as a whole day to visit everything, there are some scenic views on the valley, beautiful lake, pine trees that are a rare sight in this part of the world as well as a great place to relax near the waterfalls. The food was great and you could rent a shack with hammocks for a picnic on the river. There also seem to be some upscale hotels in the park. There are also trekking options if you want to take the guide.

All in all a great escape form heat in Phnom Penh.

Kirirom Mountain / National Park is a unique landscape in Cambodia. In an altitude above 600m altitude wide pine tree forests spread out. It looks here all but Cambodian, rather mediterranean. Fauna and flora are different than elsewhere. 'Kirirom' means 'happiness', but it's not a happy place here. The silence of the nature gave me very peacefull feelings.

The park is seldom visited by Westerners, it's off the beaten track and not easy to reach. Public transport fails, as so often, so one has to rent an own vehicle with or without driver.

Outside the park, at the foot of Kirirom Mountain lies Chambok Village. Here are a couple of good family homestays. Very simple places. They don't have names but numbers. I made a good experience in homestay 26.

Nevertheless, the nature here is under severe threat. Poaching, arson, logging and a rampant trade with the 'products' of the forest degrade the nature more and more. There are huge building sites in the park - resorts, new roads and bombastic buddhist temples are under construction or, partially, already finished. Rubbish is everywhere where people go. New settlements are built, for more people who live here, and they are growing.

There is the ususally discriminating entrance fee for foreigners (5 US$). It's ten times the price as the nationals pay, if they pay anything. The money is wasted, because natural protection here doesn't happen.

Nevertheless, Kiritom National Park is still a fabulous place to go. For a more detailled introduction with some quality images visit:

I was expecting Kirirom to be a bit more lush and green than it was; however the picnic spot we visited by the rapids was lovely. There were few tourists and tons of locals enjoying a sunny Sunday, so it felt very relaxing and enjoyable. Take a deck of cards and a picnic lunch, and enjoy the day playing in the water and people-watching. The bike trails look like they could be fun to mountain-bike as well. But don't expect natural, untouched woods, as much of it has been thinned out by deforestation. There are still some nice scenic lookouts however, and hopefully now that it's protected by law the forest will start to grow back.

"Kirirom" in Khmer means "Happy Mountain" which is exactly the feeling I got when I visited there.

Kirirom is certainly off the beaten track. My wife is from Kampong Speu and she never heard of it. I saw some info online, showed it to her and she replied, “Let’s go!”

It’s located about half way between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville off National Highway 4. Once you turn off Highway 4, you’ll drive a half hour up some rough roads in the Cardamom Mountains. High enough above sea level to have less sweltering temperatures than the lowlands.

Once you get there you’ll find a number of make-shift platforms with thatched roofs perched over the river. These are rented by the day for a nominal fee. The residents offer a variety of both local cuisine (braised chicken, fish and rice) along with western junk food. Should suit everyone’s tastes.

We went twice, once during rainy season and the river, rapids and three waterfalls were flowing nicely; and once a month ago in the dry season when the water flow is quite limited and the waterfalls were merely a trickle. It is recommended that if you decide to go there, go during rainy season when the water is flowing stronger.

In rainy season it is a wonderful wilderness experience.

All good for a day out everything you could possibly need for a good day out. Hammocks, shade, good friends, nature’s wonders and Khmer food. A place to relax in the cooler temperatures together with friends.
