18th C church serving as the parish for the town of Tequila which has a population of about 26,000. It's not only historic but quite charming and I'm one who just can't walk past a church without looking inside. Mexico has a strong Catholic faith everywhere. This one is named after St James.

We visited the night of Dec 23, and were pleasantly surprised. There was a guitarist singing songs. The church was decorated for Christmas. The church is small but beautiful. Go after dark when the church is lit up. Clearly there is money from the wealthy Cuervo and Sauza families in this church-crystal chandeliers hang from the ceilings, stained glass and the statues of the saints are high quality. There was a large charming nativity scene in the front by the altar. To the left as you enter is a niche with remains from local saint Toribio Romo Gonzalez, who was recently beatified. He is apparently now the patron saint of emigrants to the US which is ironic as in life he worked to keep the locals from emigrating. He is clearly revered as there was always a small crowd paying their respects. One caveat: watch where you walk as many of the floorboards are worn through and it would be easy and dangerous to step in the gaping holes.

Located in the center of Tequila, it’s a great place to walk around and walk inside. Absolutely amazing how they constructed this chapel. It makes for a great backdrop for photos. There are also vendors in the plaza by the chapel; food, wares, etc. This is a must see while in Tequila.

The chapel is the center of the town square and absolutely gorgeous! You are free to wander inside and check it out. Don't miss it if you're in Tequila!
