Owner description: Lismore Castle Gardens and Gallery are situated on the edge of the heritage town of Lismore, the proud winner of numerous Tidiest Town awards. Visitors are invited to wander in the historic gardens, arranged over seven acres within the 17th century outer defensive walls of Lismore Castle. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley. Featuring a wide variety of beautifully maintained plants and trees, as well as a permanent sculpture collection, Lismore Castle Gardens is one of the highlights of The Waterford Garden Trail, which includes fifteen gardens around Co. Waterford. Please note the castle itself is a private residence and is therefore not open to visitors. Entry to the garden includes access to the contemporary art gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, which hosts exhibitions of Irish and international artists. There is also a small refreshment counter and a reading room, plus art materials available for children. Visitors might also enjoy other attractions located within walking distance of the gardens. These include Lismore Cathedral, the Heritage Centre and Lady Louisa's walk, as well as a number of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. Please note due to the historic nature of the gardens and the naturally steep terrain of the ground, there are some unavoidable limitations on access for visitors who use a wheelchair or are less mobile. The gallery, Lismore Castle Arts, is occasionally closed for installation of temporary exhibitions, please contact us for full details.

I wish I'd known the castle grounds are not open to the public. While adjacent gardens are lovely €8 to walk a garden seems a bit much!

Stunning gardens and interesting art gallery. Very pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon. Excellent cafe too. A shame part of the castle is not open to the public.

Visited the gardens on a warm, sunny day with blue skies. They are really quite beautiful and must bear testament to the work of several gardeners. The gardens are laid out over several terraces with spectacular views of the castle. They were filled to overflowing...More

This is a lovely place to visit. The gardens are divided into a lower more formal garden and you cross over into the higher wall gardens which has a cafe and art gallery, a walled kitchen style garden as well as flowers and shrubs. It...More

Beautiful gardens and grounds set in an idyllic village with lots of quaint eateries and shops. Also if you like some alternative art, the gallery at the Castle is worth a visit. Absolutely lovely, highly recommended!

One our favorite places in Southern Ireland. No, you can't go in the castle--but if you enjoy gardens, this one is a stunner. An avenue of 800-year-old yew trees, well-placed contemporary sculpture, and endless beds of flowers. This is definitely worth two hours of your...More

The Gardens were nice but nothing spectacular. The big drawback for me was that you cannot visit any of the interior of the castle?? That was a real shame, because, that would make your visit more interesting. The gardens were very well maintained with nice...More

We enjoyed both the lower more natural garden and wooded area, as well as the many levels of more formal gardens. Also a nice little cafe with tables inside and outside. Took many photos to remember all the different plantings.

Bring a group of Spanish students here, I was apprehensive as to whether they would enjoy it or not. That worry was soon dispelled. Upon arriving, they loved the walk through the house to the upper garden, laughing at the swallows nested in the rafters...More
