Great day trip from Kollam central

If you are staying in Kollam then the DTPC run a great boat trip around Munroe island, one at 9am (I think) and one at 2pm for 500r per person. We got our hotel to phone ahead but I guess you can just turn up at the office (near RP Mall). After a 45 minute drive in minivan to the... More

Munroe island is very near to Kollam if you go by boat, crossing lake Ashtamudi, there are many home-stays available at reasonable rates

Even better than the pictures. Tranquil, romantic gem surrounded by nature's wonders.Over 470 bird species to seee. At night, you hear the sounds of birds and fish in the tranquil waters. Do the wide canoe trip in the morning. It's better than the Allepey houseboat tours and you'll see more. Unforgettable.

This is a perfect 'off the beaten track ' place. The backwaters are beautiful and the local villagers some of the nicest I've met. The homestay family is lovely and the room was extremely clean and comfortable.

Located 27 km from Kollam, is Munroe Island. Formed by the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River, this island is named after Colonel Munroe, the British Resident of erstwhile Travancore State. He is credited with having integrated several backwater regions by digging canals. The discovery of stone age tools and megaliths stand testimony to the antiquity of this islet... More

We did the canoe trip through the canals of Munro island with Rahul R. , a recent MA graduate who grew up,on the island. His knowledge of so many aspects of the island was exceptional, pointing out birds, various types of flora and their uses etc. We saw prawn farms, coconut rope making and the slower pace of life on... We had passed Munroe Island many times on the train to Cochi always thinking what a small railway station it was . There's only a few local trains that stop there each day . Kollam is where you need to head to and either get a train from there or an auto to Munroe Island . The people on Munroe... More

We initially went to the D.T.P.C Kollam to get a group tour to Munroe Island. We got stopped on the way by a friendly tuktuk driver who offered to arrange a private tour. He showed us a number of reviews from previous travellers in a diary which were all very encouraging we decided to go with him. Instead of getting... More

We visited both by car, and by inland waterway boat. It was sweet. Quiet. A view into another way of life.
