An incredible house in an incredible location high above one of the most beautiful lakes in Finland. For lovers of art nouveau or great architecture, it is a must. If you like Frak Lloyd Wright, you will love Hvittrask. We took the train from Helsinki to Kauklahti and no trouble catching a taxi at the taxi stand at the station.

Hvitträsk was the private residence of Eliel Saarinen (built 1901-1903 by architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen), near Helsink. It is a very inviting, large home on top of a hill overlooking Lake Vitträsk. We were in the area for four days, so this made a nice excursion. It might have been more interesting if we had been... This house situated 30 kilometers west of Helsinki, and close to Kirkkoniemi, was built in the National Romantic style for three famous architects from the turn of the previous century, and of whom Eliel Saarinen was the most famous. We visited this place set in a forest, and a short distance from a beautiful lake on a bright sunny day... More

A well maintained garden around the magnific building, former home of world known architects, and then the really fantastic nature... Forest, cliffs, the beautiful lake. Even if you don't have time to go inside the fine museum, you should really visit this place just to take a walk in the surroundings.

Beautiful place, good food (small portions, not cheap though). Nice nature walk with some signs about the designing architects. Even a beach not many people know about.

An Excerpt from Finland's National Board of Antiquities Website... "Hvitträsk was built between 1901-1903 by architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. The main building, designed in National Romantic style, built of logs and natural stone, was both a common studio and a home for Eliel Saarinen and Armas Lindgren for some years after it was completed. During that... More

Excellent destination for visitors interested to discover the essence of Finnish culture & nature combination. Prepare for a walk in nature to admire amazingly beautiful lake shore. Kids love it. Reachable also with public bus. Good local ingredient restaurant services also available.

Very nice site with beautiful architecture. Basically a story how Saarinen & co swapped wives, drank and designed buildings in a awesome romantic site.

This house is a real find and only about an hour by car from Helsinki city centre. It is set in an elevated position above a lake and seemed on the grey misty day that we visited, to be in a world of its own. Now owned and operated by the state , we were the only one`s there on... More

I'm not much of a history buff, and although I appreciate architecture as much as the next guy, I wasn't very impressed with this "museum." Initially a house for a group of Finnish architects, Hvittrask is now an open museum. It features everything you would find in a...erm...house. Bathrooms, living room, pantries and what have you. We covered the entire... More
