the place helps animals to get back to nature and thats amazing. You can see a lot of species there. They treat them and try to release them to the wild. Its about one hour visit and for sure it helps the case

Amazoonico had the wonder of a zoo with the added bonus of being a rehabilitation center for animals that have been mistreated by humans. The volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable about their work, sharing stories about the animal inhabitants and answering questions we had about their work.

The beautiful place in the forest.Tena is a very beautiful city, because it has many forests, and the people are very friendly. The tours that occur in the city for tourists are very complete. You can observe wild animals, also the landscapes in Tena are beautiful, the rivers are warm and clear. Last year my family and I visited this city and fell in love with the kindness of the people and the beautiful landscapes. If you visit Ecuador, I recommend you visit the city of Tena, if you want to relax and practice different types of sports in nature, this is the city you need.

We took a canoe to this center. Name is rescue center, so is not big as regular zoo. But it is managed very well, enough animals to let you walked around to see.

I commend what this organization is doing to rehabilitate animals and to educate humans about their work. I enjoyed visiting Amazoonico, but found that we saw many of the animals housed there in the wild while hiking and boating in the area. If you're spending a longer period of time in the area or are interested in conservation methods, this place has some interesting information. But with limited time in the area, I would not rate this as a must see destination unless you are a group that might have challenges on a longer hike, like a family with young kids. This could be a great way to see some animals at a slow pace.

We visited AmaZOOnico March 2020. We were staying in Misahualli for two nights. We were able to drive to Puerto Barantilla given we had a rental car. Be sure to call or email ahead of time to either liana lodge or Amazoonico to reserve a canoe from Puerto Barantilla. See their website... google Selva Viva to get the information you will need. If driving to Puerto Barantilla, you cross the single suspension bridge from the centre of town and head south east; be sure to at least verify your directions on a map or with GPS. We had a ecuador SIM card in our iPhone. Continue on this road for roughly 35-45 minutes. The road will turn to gravel and be rough depending on what your driving. Don’t be alarmed, the road gets narrow and rough in areas, you’re likely going to right direction. Eventually you will come to a place called Puerto Barantilla. It will be marked with a large brown sign and will have Liana Lodge written on there as well. Now, this isn’t a port as such, but rather a gravel path to the river where you get a canoe to Amazoonico. Park your car up the small hill at the house there, $2 for a car. On your prearranged meet up time you will take a canoe from here up the river to Amazoonico. The rescue centre was very informative and the guide was great at answering many questions. Many animals to see. Turtles, tortoise, birds of varying species, monkeys and others. The tour is about 1-2 hours. I suggest wearing good shoes or hiking boots for the tour.
After our tour the canoe picked us up again and brought us back to Liana Lodge for a lunch that I had pre arranged, it was delicious and reasonably priced. We kid $12 USD for the return canoe trip, much better than the potential $100-$120 canoe ride from Misahualli.
That about sums it up. Take lots of water with you as it is hot. Take cash and change, for canoe and for the little gift shop at the rescue centre. We bought chocolate. Any questions at all, toss me a DM. We did not us any tour companies either. Cheers.

Our guide explained how many of the animals that come to the facility are actually rehabilitated to the point that they can return to the wild. And those that can't are at least cared for properly. She was really good at instilling some really strict rules for staff and visitors alike and the reason for those rules. (ie no interaction - not even eye contact with the animals.) The only concern I had with the tour was that the group seemed very large - at least 30 people. I think it would have been better for the visitors and less stressful for the animals if we were toured around in groups of only about 10 people...

A tiny place for a short visit to see just a few animals and birds. The guide stopped our boat on the river so we could view monkeys

Our lodge planned this whole day tour for us, including a trip to the Amazoonico which we really enjoyed. A german speaking volunteer guided us through the areal and taught us very interesting and informative things. The animals at the rescue center are mostly from illegal keeping and brought there by the government. We weren‘t able to see all animals, since some are only active during the night but it was still a very nice tour.
